The watch has now moved to a warning. The radar looks nasty!

Does anyone remember the blizzard of Nov 86? This is reminding me of it...if I recall, it started out like this and on the same date. Freaky...

November 10th, 1986: Winnipeg dug out from beneath 35.8 cm of snow left by a monster 32-hour storm that dumped 30 to 50 cm of the white stuff and created 2 m drifts in southern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. In Winnipeg, officials pulled buses and snowplows off the roads and closed the airport. Residents used snowmobiles to navigate main arteries.

Is it technically illegal to take snowmobiles out on the main arteries in such a situation? Does a declaration have to be made in order to allow people to take this kind of action?

In 1986 they were asking for anyone with snowmobiles to pick up doctors and nurses and take them to work. I remember seeing snowmobiles all over...you couldn't get around without one.

yes a declaration is needed...
But lets say they did not declare you could use a snowmobile to get around.. whom exactly is going to catch you?

I remember the 86 blizzard very well.......I was working in Morden MB and Friday after work I had to get to Altona, a distance of 30 or so miles. You couldn't see your hand in front of your face, it was blowing that bad. I figured taking the highway would be too risky, likely end up in a head on collision..and so in my youthful wisdom I took country gravel roads to Altona. The normal 35-40 minute trip took me more then 2 hours. I think back on it now and realize how bloody stupid I was, I didn't meet even one other motorist enroute, had anything happened I would have been sunk.

I remember the big one...'66. Sat in a bus that was completely covered over by drifting snow...went home and relaxed for two days.
