Winter storm watch for
City of Winnipeg issued
Rain changing to wet snow, strong winds and ice pellets expected Thursday into Friday.
The potential for severe winter weather exists over these regions.
A potent Colorado low continues to intensify and track slowly northeastward. This storm system currently over southern South Dakota will move very slowly northeastward thus an extended period of preciptation can be expected over southern Manitoba. A few showers out ahead of this system will spread across southern Manitoba today and this evening. More widespread precipitation is expected across the region tonight as this system approaches. A wide variety of precipitation can be expected with rain on Thursday from the Red River eastward with rain fall amounts of 25 to 45 mm likely. Wet snow is expected over western areas as strong northerly winds on the back side of this system ushers in colder air. There will be a narrow band of ice pellets or freezing rain in the transition area between the rain and wet snow over the western Red River Valley Thursday morning and over the eastern valley Thursday evening. Snow fall amounts will be quite variable as well depending on how soon the rain changes to snow but current estimates indicate 10 to 15 cm of snow is possible over central areas of southern Manitoba. The relatively warm ground and compacting of snow may affect the actual snowfall accumualtion. The snow will gradually taper off Friday afternoon as this system tracks away from the region. In addition, strong northerly winds gusting to 70 km/h will develop on Thursday and persist Thursday night. The combination of the falling snow and strong winds will create poor visibilities in blowing snow over open areas.
A winter storm watch is an alert of the potential development of severe winter weather. Persons in or near these areas should be prepared for developing adverse weather conditions and should listen for updated watches and possible warnings.
