Somebody suggested that we start a thread about the whole Israel-Palestinian thing. I believe the thread was actually started. I couldn't find it when I stumbled across this article, so I started a new thread.

If you're searching for clarity, it's better to seek discussion and points of view other than one's own. I think most people would agree with this approach.

Where did you get this information? Can you quote a source for both claims?

I don't believe civil discourse here will bring about peace in the middle east, but this is a constant international topic and I know I personally would benefit from a better understanding of the topic. Others might benefit, too.

Palestinians and Israelites and their ancestors have occupied that area of the middle east for thousands and thousands of years. And for just as long they have been fighting back and forth over it.

It's just a religion. It's so funny, my bf is jewish and if someone asks her what she is she says I am Jewish. I don't go around saying I am Christian.

Perhaps she views "Jewish" as being both about a religion but also about a cultural group. Chrisitian is a faith but not a cultural group. Chinese is a cultural group but not a faith. Jewish is both, to her.

That is open for debate whether Jews are a ethnic group or religion. I mean it's not like they openly accept, let alone try to convert people.

They're not converting people, they're trying to sell them diamonds.

The whole History thing is pretty interesting. So Zionism, the wanting of a homeland started in the 1890's, and it took over 50 years to become reality with ongoing killing from the Arabs and the Jews.
In 1948 when Israel declared their independence, they were attacked by all 6 Arab Countries, and it was only the arms sold to them by one of the Russian Countries that allowed them to stay in business, as it was explained to me. Over the years was and more war, until today there is peace with Egypt, that took 30 years to negotiate.
There will be peace eventually, land will be returned and if not Mayor Sam and the Shindleman's will build condo's.
Israel for all the criticism and the whole Jewish world wide community have managed to get strong through educating their young and watching them get involved in the whole community.
That is also why I think there is so much anti semitism, because of the success, except in the case of MizP, who is just scary in her agressive (but great cooking), nature, due to people punching her out, where she grew up.
It amazes me, with people who are anti anyone, because to me that means that they do not know that group at all and all they have is other negative reports about that group.
I never liked Ukrainians, until I met DeanK, and realized that that group was as nice as all the other groups that I was brought up with!
People are basically all the same!
