Personally, I don't think any crown corporation, government or city workers should be allowed to strike or belong to a union.

Of course not.....they should just do what they are told damn it! We need to reduce taxes, let's start with wage freezes for all government employees for the next 25 years! That will really stimulate the economy.

Let's see how long it takes till everyone's wages drop along with them. Oh the prosperity we could all enjoy then.

Who said anything about communism? I'm just not prepared to pave the way back to 19th century England like so many others who seem to be eager to see wages and working conditions return to those levels. Why do conservatives always bring up communism in any discussion about unions or socialism? Are Swede's communists? What about the Dutch? Or the Potuguese? All commie bastards?

Banning unions for government workers would be the first step in that direction. Followed by banning all unions, and then removing minimum wages. Not long after that you could kiss labour standards good bye. With the lobbying powers of big business as well as increasing pressures from globalization on everyone to do whatever it takes just to keeps their jobs it's a very likely scenerio.

ALL of the benefits you enjoy today wether you are a union member or not only exist BECAUSE of labour unions. Communism has nothing to do with it.

From Wikipedia:
"
The Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 was one of the most influential strikes in Canadian history, and became the platform for future labour reforms.
Although many Canadian companies had enjoyed enormous profits on World War I contracts, wages and working conditions were dismal and labour regulations were mostly non-existent.
In March 1919 labour delegates from across Western Canada convened in Calgary to form a branch of the "One Big Union", with the intention of earning rights for Canadian workers through a series of strikes."

Makes one just itch to return to the conditions that existed before those times. I can't wait......

I think all government workers should recieve wages based on current industry standards. on average no raise this year.. guess what.. no raise.. on average 4%... thats what you get too. on average a lower of wages and reduction in benefits... TADA... you now work for less and have less benefits.
This includes elected and appointed positions as well.

What would this mean for a union if the major thing they were resonsible for was removed from the equation. Would they still be required?

So who would ensure the conditions of the agreement are upheld once the unions were no longer needed Dean? What checks and balances would be in place to ensure that the agreement was not changed over time to favour the employing government body?

Laws.

this simple.

Here is the pay for eternity. No amount of politician trying to get themselves paid more,or judges demanding more or any of that crap. No more 20+% raises for these people. AND no more dicking the employees around either. Real simple city/province/country ( whichever one you work for) is prospering, you prosper too.

Judge, PM,MP,MLA, Premier, bus driver, police man, nurse, janitor... all get the same X% raise. No complaints that AAA is getting more then BBBB, and no complaints that public sector is doing better then private.

Not a bad idea in principle except for the fact that politicians change laws all the time.

What silly drama is being played out here now? We sure do love jumping to bizarre extremes in an effort to get our point across.

You ask who will protect us? Who protects us now? Look at how successful non-union companies and their employees are now. What makes you think we'll allow the laws to be changed to take that away?

Get serious man. Look, unions proved their worth 100 years ago. They've proved their worth for many decades. But they've also moved from protecting the worker to squeezing every single dime they can out. It is no longer about safety. It is about taking as much as they can in wages and benefits.

Look what they did to the automotive sector. Imagine paying a car jockey $75k annually to park cars.

which is why changes to legislation involving it would require a full public vote. Any politicians changing it their own would automatically recieve a negative 200% pay adjustment retroactive to the first time they were elected.
