so ..... anyone know if clams/shellfish of some sort are native to our rivers?

My boys found a freakin huge on in the mud on the banks of the ass river. like about CD size. And its still alive.

I mean I assume they are native but, that large? Is that normal? Do people eat these things?

You catch them often if you do any fishing in the Red at all. Seen tons of them over the years...often get huge clumps together. I gues the close on your line if your drop near them.

There are tones of freshwater mollusks in lakes and river across Canada. They have been part of the local ecosystem for ions.

interesting..

apparently we have a couple of main species in our rivers and yes they can get big.. also apparently if we went looking there would most likely a big bed of them where we found this guy,

Even more interesting... biologist love them because they are a very good indicator of the number of metallic contiminants in the river...

if you are interested here is a nice little read

I ate a plateful of clams from Lake Winnipeg once....they were small but delicious....but to me, anything tastes great with butter and garlic.
