Someone just told me that there wouldn't be "any skating on the river this year because the water levels were too high."

This sounds absurd to me, as the water is...frozen. Then again, I'm from a place were rivers don't freeze, so I'm asking the experts here:

What the hell?

Anyone know anything about the River Trail opening this year? If not, do people skate at their own risk on the river for shits and giggles?? This was the ONLY thing I was excited about this winter, and someone is steeling my joy.

I heard that the river trail wasn't going to happen as well this year, and then last week, The Forks went and unveiled the new warm up shack designs for the river trail this year.

I am aware that the water stewardship board will be releasing excess quantities of water from the Shellmouth dam all winter long.

In the same article with the shacks, they said that there will be a trail, it may not be the same as last year, and last year wasn't the same as the year before either. It all depends on how the ice freezes. They also said there may be a combination of land and river trails at the Forks. The land trails are fun as well

What I understand is the ice will freeze in such a way that makes it difficult to skate. Not too sure what exactly the problem would be. But the trail can still open for the hearty hikers out there and maybe cross-country skiers?

A new sport is born...cross .country Skating...hmmmm, maybe they should ice all the bike paths and we could skate to work. I bet there would be more use out of that.

Remember, ice only forms on the top bit of the water, and with levels being so high, there is still a lot of moving water beneath that layer of ice, and thats what makes it dangerous.

Mother Nature can be a b1tch!

But then again, we can just blame it on the NDP government as another reason to boot their asses out of office. Smile

Maybe its the water stewardship's lack of action that's caused this Wink

Nope. It's McFayden allowing people to piss in the lakes that has caused all these problems.

It will probably depend on the amount of frazil ice on the Red or Assiniboine. Two winters ago the Red was not usable, and last winter the Assiniboine looked iffy but they ironed it flat somehow. We will see if and where there will be a trail.

simple CS

Water is very high right now. It freezes. Water level should drop about 5to8 feet over winter.. ice falls, refreezes, ice falls, refreezes... you end up with sh1t.

The river trail is the main asset of Winnipeg and I think was only usable for about 4 weeks this year, and now after a ruined summer we can look forward to a miserable winter as well. They should just declare this city as uninhabitable and give it back to the wildlife. Move the populace to Hawaii or other decent place.

I still wonder why they built the River Walk so low.

Why didn't they build to 'worst case scenario' rather than what they did...that is...build it so low as to be flooded out all the time.

Again, where do we get these noodle heads that make these stupid mistakes all the time.

River Walk

Assiniboine closures

Nassau Street one way nonsense

....and on and on....

Good question JTF. Who is accountable for these snafus? Before another season goes by that river walk needs to be rebuilt. That is where the bloody federal stimulus money should have gone. At least there it would be used/appreciated. Not like the crap cycling infrastructure/traffic calming infrastructure those bozos built.

Exactly.

I'm all for biking. I love it and our family does a lot of it IN THE SUMMER TIME!!

To dedicate all that roadway and to disrupt traffic that much, for so little, is stupid and the reason people are pissed off I'd say. At least all the people that I've talked to have expressed that opinion.
