Does anyone Believe That Anyone Can Win In Afghanistan? Iraq? Iran? Roseau Reserve?

The United States and its NATO allies are losing in Afghanistan because of a lack of co-ordination and broad commitment, one of Britain's top diplomats and defence experts said yesterday.
Paddy Ashdown, former British representative for Bosnia and once tipped to be the UN special representative in Afghanistan, said the allies face defeat unless operational changes are made.
"We're on our way to losing and our young men are dying out there because politicians won't get their act together," he told an audience of defence experts.

Shite.....look at the geopolitics of that region.....Oh I could fill pages as to why no one will ever "win" that area.....Alexander couldn't do it so what makes NATO believe they are more capable?

Shall we nuke 'em? Start anew? Think we'd get it right the second time?

Okay guys...read this book by Greg Mortenson "Three Cups of Tea".....the main issues are nailed down perfectly. Please. I have been studying this region for a good part of the last twenty years of my life to the point where I was learning Dari, Farsi and Pashto....I still may go over there simply because it, the Kush, could be a flashpoint. None of those borders should exist because they ignore ancient tribal boundaries.

T.E. Lawrence knew it as have several scholars and generals over the years....why do we keep trying to box in and define a region that defies those sorts of constrictions? We reap what we sow and shall continue to do so as long as some of us believe our "superiority" as opposed to just communicating.

Allies okay road map out of Afghanistan
Foreign troops must stay in Afghanistan for another decade, President Hamid Karzai said Thursday as world powers agreed on an exit strategy including a plan to persuade Taliban fighters to disarm in exchange for jobs and homes.
10 more years and then what? What a waste of resources, Canadian lives, and all for what? Freedom in Afghanistan? They never had it, and never will !

The 20-year old Afghan conflict has created an open war economy, affecting Afghanistan and surrounding areas. Not only has Afghanistan become the world’s largest opium producer and a center for arms dealing, but it supports a multibillion dollar trade in goods smuggled from Dubai to Pakistan. This criminalized economy funds both the Taliban and their adversaries. It has transformed social relations and weakened states and legal economies throughout the region. Sustainable peace will require not just an end to fighting and a political agreement but a regional economic transformation that provides alternative forms of livelihood and promotes accountability.

...just a thought.

Living Dead has it right, but I would say just keep troops out, buy all the poppie production, cutting out the Taliban, the bikers, and get cocaine prices down.

Another 2 page write up and it is clear that our 145 dead soldier's and billions of dollars of expenses have given great relief to a 180 yard radius outside of our Canadian troop bases.
Thank goodness for our strong leader, Harper, for seeing the absolute wste of Canadian troops for the long term. Let the God Damned Afghanistan army patrol Afghanistan!

Sad to say it would just start again, war or fighting it is never going to go away.

Without legitimizing the opium industry, we will never have peace in Afghanistan. Their economy is too dependant on it to do away with it.

Unless we come to terms with this, things there will never change. imo anyway.
