What is the definition of "winning" in Afghanistan, anyway?

no chance. they don't even publish how many of the nasty taliban creatures get eliminated each day. it is very sad that we were not able to help the afghani people.

if you dont have the support of the populace, no war is winnable.

No one with an IQ over 67 (Stockwell and Harper) ever thought that "WE" had a chance to win ! We are there because we are part of NATO, who made a committment to try and help the country.
Thank goodness for our supreme commander-in-chief , Harper , who had enough guts to set a day from which Canada will not participate in this nonsense!
153 dead Canadians! No support of any 3rd world country , "in need", is worth this committment, in my opinion!
Why we spend this kind of dollars and deaths is beyond me! Screw NATO! I bet you this is the USA's fault! Damn Busch's with their might is right attitude!

In human rights terms, that country is well over half a millennium away from reaching western European standards of conduct ( or North American ). It's not something that some outside army can instill overnight. Ultimately, the US should have ignored Iraq altogether, went in with us and a bunch of other NATO or other willing nations and booted the snot out of the remaining Al-Qaeda terrorists and their harboring friends the Taliban, and then promptly left.

As much as I read that many Afghans are glad that we are there, I don't think they're going to warm up to the ideals of democracy anytime soon.

Best way to bring them up to date is to give everyone a free TV.

Then they'll know what they're missing.

You can't keep them down on the farm after they've seen Paree.

We shouldn't mix in to any other countries problems , until we have solved OUR COUNTRIES problems!
We went there to provide good clean water, safe housing, medical attention, all of which we haven't provided to our aboriginal community, or our North End!

The USA dropped the ball after the Soviet withdrawal.....there was the chance to rebuild and smash the seeds of Taleban discontent that was just starting up. The Warlords, chieftains etc....remember this is a region that is tribally divided and defined and not by modern borders - these folks were willing to stop fighting and start rebuilding. Go back to the late eighties......examine that time and there you will have your reasons as to why this bullshite is going down right now.

The Brits lost, Alexander the Great got beaten up good.....other than the tribalism of the region the geography is teh biggest obstacle.

Just understand that the Russians lost because the damn US supplied all the locals , Taliban and the warlords, with missiles, and anti tank, anti helicopter guns, until the carnage was too great and they pac ked it in.
When the US got involved the US warned the soviets not to sell any equipement to the Taliban and Warlords! Now that is pretty funny.

Same old same old.....one of my friends here in town was with the Russian Army back then, over there and he told me of a typical tactic that was employed to great effect, the geography playing a key role.....once the Mujaheddin got some RPG's they were ready to rock n roll.....picture this - windy, narrow rock-studded roads and on either side are cliffs and on top of those cliffs observing a line of vehicles going through the narrow pass guess what the Mujaheddin are gonna do in order to optimize their situation? They are not gonna let loose with gobs of AK fire against APC's and tanks - no.....they are gonna take out the front vehicle and the rear vehicle thus trapping the rest of the line in that boxed in terrain. Quite effective.

This same tactic has worked over the centuries with the only difference being the toys used on either side. In the end, strategy and geography win.

Until someone is willing to say " Eff this " and employ WW2 tactics for the situation, this won't end up being a conventionally " winnable war. Let the tribes duke it out for the next 1000 years. I'm not sure they will though, since the discovery of some estimated trillion dollars in minerals underground there.

I keep on wondering, if we can't stop organized crime in our own society, what makes us think we can stop the bad guys over there, in a few short years?

How much money has Canada spent killing the 153 canadians in Afghanistan, all because of NATO? And we got involved there why? U.S.A. of course!
So much money and lives wasted, but speak to Bush and his cronies and put some truth serum into those s.o.b's and they are there because of wanting to keep the manufacturers of guns going strong- Haliburton!
The shame of electing fools to run the country. Do any Congressmen have their sons over in Afghanistan ot Iraq?? lol

Bullshit button for sure- Al Gore- the inventor of the internet
George Bush - We won the War (invasion) in Iraq!

And how many Senators are up on charges of mischief, thiefdom? And we think Afghanistan is being run by Warlords? I think the USA is just the same- Blajoyovitch on trial, Conrad Black in jail for 2 years and after over $40,000,000 is defense bills is about to be found innocent!
What a system of corrupt leaders! Busch isn't corrupt is he?
