I thought the speed limit was being raised... what's holding this up?

Yeah really. Back in September when I was in town, I took a drive out west on the THC and the speed limit was still 100, when I was lead to believe that it had already been upgraded to 110.

What gives?

Yeah, that's why the limit is staying at 100. On the highways where its going up to 110, 130-140 "feels" fine.... I would have to assume, of course.

I thought Highway one west from the Ontario border was a relatively decent road. Twinned most of the way. Where it is single lane much of that span is divided with little oncoming traffic. That span of Hwy 1 could be 110.

It is single lane from the border to just west of Falcon and that is reduced to 90 I thought. Maimly because of the intersections and the joining traffic in the flow.

From the Freep today:
"The Trans-Canada east of Winnipeg will remain a 100 km/h zone in part
because the Canadian Shield makes it more difficult to build a road
that’s safe at high speeds. There are too many trees, boulders and
other obstructions on the shoulder."

I drive the TCH east every day. From Winnipeg to Ste Anne the road is dead flat, straight and it's four lanes. That section could easily be 110kph.

Further east there are trees and boulders on the shoulder...

Really why do we need this as it doe.s not save that much time , just burns more gas .

That would be my time and my gas. I drive 110 now as do most drivers. My point is that if it's OK west of Winnipeg, then it should be just as safe to the east. (Until you get to the section with trees and boulders of course.)

Trees and bolders on the shoulders eh? They think we're stupid.

yeah it makes no sense to not make that stretch up to the Stienbach turnoff 110. But maybe its because people would be to used to doing 110 and would continue to do it past the turn off?

They don't want to encourage people to go to Ontario!

Put those metal strips in the highway like they do in Alberta that make your car sound and feel like they are falling apart if you are speeding. lol they scared the sh!t outa me the first time I hit one speeding!

I thought those strips were used to send a message (reduced speed; turn lane; stay awake boob you're too close to the shoulder...)

What is the matter with you guys? 100 is plenty fast! My car cannot go that fast!
I drive a 1951 Chevrolet and its top speed is 95 miles per hour!

They are just rumble strips and are everywhere along major highways. You feel them at no matter what speed you are travelling.

Anyways, There is no reason why the speed limit can't be 110 on the TCH east of Winnipeg up to the place where it becomes single lane. The highway is in good condition last I drove it being last summer. Man, the TCH in Alberta is 110 up to the Banff Park border, and that portion is in the Rocky Mountains. Even the Yellowhead is 110 up to where it becomes a single lane highway west of Hinton, and there are very steep slopes and river valleys right beside the highway. The portion of the TCH east of Winnipeg doesn't even begin to get significantly "rocky" and "hilly" until after traffic merges into single lane traffic.
I think the government thinks Manitoban's don't get out much, and will buy any excuse it gives them.
