The New York City Council has decided to strike down a law enacted via citizens using ballot measures.

So... why bother implementing term limits if a city council can just turn around and say, nah... we are not going to follow those limits anyway.

One would hope that the populace of New York rises up and removes these underhanded back stabbing boobs from office.

I don't agree with the method being used...but personally I think term-limits are ridiculous.

If you get someone in office who is doing a good job, they should be allowed to continue doing that for as long as the public allows it. THAT'S Democracy. By having term-limits, you're basically telling the politicians..."It doesn't matter how good you are, or if you do anything worthwhile...you're only in for "xxx" number of years, and then we're kicking you out anyway.

I disagree with term limits also. The voters have the power to say when a politician has been in long enough.

oh I totally agree I am against term limits, however in this case the people of new york implemented them and now the council is unimplementing them. I could see if Council implemented them and then reversed its decision. But this one is just completely wacked. How can they do this and expect to survive a vote?

Term limits are stupid if people wanted term limits they can just implement them by not voting for someone.

The trouble is the incumbents in this city seem to be permanent fixtures. Once voted in it seems we are loathe to vote them out. And you can't argue some of our councilor/sloths need to go.

then the electorate should starting voting them out and it that takes rules being put into place about running an election.. ie no stating what you did with public money and no using any public resources at all during your campaign and such then so be it.

Well, I also think that any party that wants to run for a specific office should pay a fee to "apply".

Then each part is given an "election fund"...all equal amounts...and given specific dates to run their "campaign".

Every dollar and ad has to be monitored and accounted for

The party that wins gets to keep the advertising costs, the party that loses has to refund the government for running such a crappy campaign Wink.

I am not in favour of banning term limits.. I am in favour of not having them, HOWEVER if the populace wants them, then they should exist. Banning them would prevent the populace from implementing them.
