cut bloated beauracracies and administration on the boards and put that money into the frontline staff and students who actually need it.

well yeah.. but... where are you getting that money from since we are no longer taxing property to get it?

"Everyone" complains that its on the propery tax bill ...but few realize that removing it will just make it a "hidden" tax.

It's not hidden at all. It would come from the provincial portion of your income tax.

I think Bjornson is moving toward recinding the taxing powers of the school boards, especially after the WSD 1 more or less, told him to fcuk himself, and that they were going to raise taxes this year dipite his views.

Seems to me that putting it into income tax would make it 100% hidden.

Huh? You don't know how much you pay or, see/know that you pay income tax?

i know exactly what I pay in income tax... translating that to what is spent on... education, or healthcare or... whatever gets a little more difficult. Can you imagine how many people would be yelling and screaming about the Nurses always being 3rd highest paid if every time it happened they saw a direct result on their property tax?

Making things hidden into the income tax makes people care less as they dont immediatley notice it as much.

Take that logic and create multiple tax deductions making everything visible:

Instead of income tax = $100

Health tax: $20
Education tax: $20
Infrastructure tax: $20
Tax a: $20
Tax b: $10
Tax c: $5
Evil Doer legacy tax: $5

I agree that the school tax should be removed from the property tax. Its just a sham to disguise who is collecting the tax.

This is something that the NDP should get onto right away. Afterall, if anyone can come up with a new scheme to tax the sh1t out of us, it has to be the NDP.

I think the school system needs to be restructured before you worry about the taxes.

There's how many "Divisions" in Winnipeg? and why? There should be 1 Division that covers the entire area inside the Perimeter. That knocks out a bunch of School Boards, trustees, etc. Won't have to raise school taxes again for a decade from that alone.

It will also help improve the less fortunate schools, as now they would all be able to be improved to the same level. Salaries would stabilize.

Perhaps even go so far as to build 1/2 a dozen "mega-schools", instead of maintaining nearly 200 little ones.

Restructuring of the school system is definitely needed. No one can tell me that a 2 school boards for all of Winnipeg will consume considerably less $ for administration and bureacracy. (By law, we still need an English and French school system)

One of the biggest games is that each division negotiates union contracts separately. So they continually play off each other. Having all these separate divisions makes no sense whatsoever. People also forget that school divisions have the authority to levy taxes, which they do, quite liberally and without regard for us poor pricks that have to pay them. I am so tired of these commie bastards hiding behind my children and using them as pawns.

if we remove the tax from property and put it on income.. there would be no reason at all for anything more then one province wide school board,.. and yes just one.. frick the french having their own school board thats unneeded.

The French thing may be unneeded, but it is law.

it's the law to have the program...not to have the board.

One board can handle both program....just make sure a couple people on the board can speak french.

"just make sure a couple people on the board can speak french."
why would that be neccessary?

Just a note that the French school board covers the whole province. An example for the English system to look at!

That's probably because there's 1/10th the number of French schools in the province.

I guess I still don't understand the division though.

In New Jersey, there is one School Board Association, and each County/City would have a smaller board, of unpaid volunteers.

I'm not saying it's something to model from, as I found the NJ version poorly run too...but if an entire state with a population of several million people can run with one governing body for all, I don't see why the Province can't do that with less than 1M people...especially less than 1M students.

the school board trustee was the "guy with power" at one point in our past AND it used to be that pretty much the ENTIRE school budget was set forth by the one guy and getting money from his neighbours. Then the government took over.

How many Boards do you need in a province of around a million people? I say one.

Yeah...that model never works either.

A board is a good idea...and the board should elect someone to oversee the meetings, etc.
