When a new council comes into play? The building got heritage status in 1984! Mayors since then - Norrie, Thompson, Murray, Katz.

I wouldn't put this on a new council.

Heritage Status...what does that mean?

Does that mean that some old decrepit building which should've been torn down decades ago gets "protected" from demolition because some whining over-emotional nincompoop can't accept moving forward in time and building new, functional, and more usable buildings in its place?

Is it one which despite not owning the building, some idiot has stepped up and declared the building somehow "important" and should therefore not be torn down, even if the OWNER of the building is trying to?

Or have I missed the mark on that one?

It should be stripped of that status.

Nothing will ever get built in this city. And you wonder why there is such sprawl in this city. Put up barrier after barrier after barrier to any and all infill construction and ye will reap what ye sow...

Who was fighting this? Friends of 166 Roslyn?

It should either have never had status in the first place or it should have kept its status.

We need an evaluation of all our historical buildings and we need to set them all going foward. No more suprises for developers or local residents. Get it done and leave it done.

We've had several new councils since 1984. Your post sounded like the only reason it was being demolished was that there was a change in the council ( i.e. the council that had given it the historical designation in 1984 had recently been replaced by a new council.)

I would assume that if we had the exact same council as we did in 1984 that it would not have even been entertained to remove the status.

so help me to understand this.. they are going to destroy, what appears to be a beautiful home in the village for an apartment complex.. BUT they won't demo an old wooden wall that most people didn't even know existed for the exact same reason.

some times i just don't get this city.

I believe the fort grumpy but it has history, this house in the village is just another old house of someone no one knows cept when you go there .

You forget that if they demolish this house and build something new with more people living their , that the streets may get more traffic and cause the streets to decay! And the extra noise, don't forget that! And the extra trafic will cause more global warming, and we all know that it is way two friggin hot in Winnipeg!

I'm tired of this crap with all these "historical" or "heritage" buildings. HOw many old dilapidated buildings do we need in this City? Why would anyone want to buy one of these gems, when the cost of making it habitable is consdierably greater than the cost of new construction/
