If you get the go ahead for the research and the jobs will be no more then present Forest Rangers , most researchers do it for school and glory not money .

Well, I am glas this is finally going ahead. It's great to see Manitoba being part of this effort to preserve an almost undisturbed swath of Boreal forest (the largest in the world I believe), helping to preserve the fragile ecosystems of the area, especially that of woodland cariboo. Glad to see Doer (who I normally despise) getting this effort going.

Okay, explain to me why it costs $1 million a year to leave a forest undisturbed?

Exactly.

Bribes....does anyone remember the "make work" programs in the summer of 1989 up north? Let's see who has some excellent memory here.....those "programs" wound up costing in the hundreds of millions, very few benefited but many lives as well as the environment were affected in negative ways.

Is that money to pay off the folks who want to disturb the undisturbed land...mayhaps?

Is that around the time they stopped hiring locals to fight forest fires and, omigosh, the rash of fires stopped?

Does anything satisfy you people? My goodness, every little development is met by "it costs too much and will be a waste of money blah blah blah" bullshit comments from too many people. Nothing ever seems to please too many of you. And you call me negative? Sheesh!

Oh please. I would rather use "you people" instead of listing off those I am refering to, becoming too confrontational, considering the finger of critisizm is often pointed in my direction, directly at me. And yes, I would say it again.

1 million per year to leave something alone seems to me to be too much.

but that is exactly what the 1 million will pay for. The residents in/near the area want to develop it to make money for themselves. The 1 million per year in jobs and such is basically payment to not mess with it.

Okay, it is a fair question. Without knowing the exact breakdown of the costs, my guess is that much of the money will be used for research grants, enforcement of regulations pertaining to the site ( and that will be a b1tch of a task), maintenance of any public facilities, etc. Because it's in a remote area, it will cost more to fund. I think the location is raising the costs. But I think it's worth it for protect one of the largest swaths of pristine forest in the world.

seems rather more simple to me. Keep everyone out. But then again paying an enforcement team would probably cost 10 million per year.

This is Doer ensuring his legacy. Perhaps he thinks they'll name the area after him: Evil Doer Provincial Forest. Probably because now that he is out of office, and the NDPs time in office likely limited, his west side Hydro line fiasco/Boreal Forest horsesh1te is likely lost... As it should be.
