Crime rate hit 30-year low in 2007
OTTAWA – New statistics suggest serious criminal offences were on the decline well before the federal Conservative government launched its anti-crime campaign in Parliament.
The figures, reported by Statistics Canada on Tuesday, indicate police-reported crime was less serious overall in 2007, the year after the Tories took office, than it was a decade earlier. The agency says the crime rate had also dropped, but to a lesser degree.

Auto theft will be its own offence under proposed changes to Canada's Criminal Code introduced in Parliament today.

Offenders arrested by police for stealing a car are now charged with theft over $5,000 or theft under $5,000 depending on the value of the vehicle stolen.

St. Boniface MP and former city police office Shelly Glover said if passed the new provisions will help the courts better deal with repeat thieves as their record will reflect auto theft, not theft over or under.

The proposed legislation will also carry a mandatory prison sentence for an adult convicted of repeat car thefts.

It does not alter youth repeat offences as they are dealt with the Young Offenders Act.

The introduction of the auto theft legislation comes about 18 months after a provincial and city delegation went to Ottawa asking for the change as it would help authorities deal with Winnipeg's auto theft problem

That problem has dropped 64 per cent over the past year due to a variety of ongoing law enforcement methods.

Usually, there is no reason to call police. There's nothing that they can do anyway in many circumstances, and after you've been through the reporting system once, you know it's a waste of time.

All the more shame. There was a time when the public was important to the police. We've allowed bleeding hearts to hijack the judicial system making the police too busy continually chasing the same rat bastard evil doers. Lock these a$$holes up more often and for longer periods of time and maybe the police will actually have time to be peace keepers rather than babysitters.

The public is still important but the public needs to stay involved and the courts need to get back to law not rights . Good Post Grumpy

But the public isn't ALLOWED to stay involved.

There was a time where an average citizen could apprehend a suspect and sit on them till the police arrive to make the arrest...the police would say thank you and take the suspect away.

Today though, the police would come...arrest the citizen for assault, let the suspect go cause now HE'S the victim, and then the suspect would turn around and sue the citizen for assault and damages...and would probably win.

No offence but you are wrong you might get arrested but it is the goverment of the land to blame not the police . Police only enforce not write the law . If the perp fell down the steps while you held him then you might be surprised as to the blindness of the said officer.

Sad to say most people do not get involved as they are afraid it is easier to sit inside the house and b1tch at who has to clean up .

The police have too often arrested the victim in these circumstances Pav. And while there are laws in place the police also use discretion when deciding when to arrest and lay charges.

Not too sure if that is accurate. or not. Crime rates parallel the birth rate. High birth rate=high crime rate, low birth rate=low crime rate. The Canadian birth rate is at an all time low, and the % of people under 30 is also at it's lowest level in Canadian history.
Since most violent crimes are committed by people under 30, it would explain why the violent crime rate is at an all-time low

What I mean by that is, as the Canadian population gets older, crime drops. The majority of crime, especially violent is committed by males 18-30. This is exactly what is happening. 20 years ago, the crime rate was higher, but then again, the % of adults under 30 was also much higher.

There are a few things that have to be pointed out!
Individuals used to help out when a crime was being committed, but today they are inside their home, on some internet forum, and cannot be pried away to help out!
Others who would help out , have to get some thumbs up or down penalty looked after!
Regarding making a crime limit in jail upped by 4 years from 10 to 14, means nothing, because sentencing is based generally on accepted norms. So the limit is being raised from 10 to 14 years means crap, because no one ever got 10 years. If a judge handed out a 14 year sentence for car theft , it would be turned over on appeal as excessive!
It is all for show! I bet you the average term handed out is 2-4 years.

They have the discretion to arrest not when it comes to charges that is up to the crown . So if they do arrest then the law was broken if the crown decides that it is not warranted then you are released. .

Trust me they turn a blind eye often when they can .

I think there might be something to this. It would seem Manitoba and Saskatchewan have the highest rates of (violent) crime in Canada. There is one demographic that has a very high birthrate right now. Very high indeed. Suppose there is a correlation?
