Tom Brodbeck and the Sun are talking about crime in Winnipeg in today's paper. Because I'm a news hound I constantly bombarded with Winnipeg stories. The Sun's poll suggests Crime is decidedly NOT down in Winnipeg, in stark contrast to the stats the Winnipeg Police report in Crime Stat.

Is there more crime in Winnipeg? Or is there less of one crime but more of another. Do you feel there is an increase in violent crime?

My feeling is that people are not reporting many crimes now as they feel there is no point in doing so. Stats are down as a result.

yes, I think crime is down a bit...but little to do with the police.

I think most people are fed up with the criminals "getting away" with crime, and enough people have publicly said so that the criminals are less likely to try things.

When a 70-year-old woman can fend off a car thief (a story from this past summer), then the criminals are going to think twice. More and more of the general public are standing up for their rights, and telling the criminals to go somewhere else.

Agreed. Since I left Winnipeg crime is down to zilch. I will likely move back, but I will really miss the ability to leave my garage door open or leave stuff outside and not have it touched. I can wander around at night without worry.

Though, when i lived in the west end, I was never bothered by anyone, but I am a bigger male. I have only experienced having things stolen when living in Winnipeg.....

When I left my west end neighbourhood, crime was as bad as always, not better nor really worse. However, when talking to people during the civic election around Arlington, crime was a major issue for them. They reported that they did go to the cop shop to report, but the cops seemed not to care much about their complaints. Seems people might just have given up reporting it as earlier mentioned.

Hey, good news!

At least we are not just Slurpee Capital of the World, but Murder Capital of Canada.... we should rename Garbage Hill to the Murderhorn.

W#hat difference doe's it make where I or you live , crime is crime it affects us all . If we continue to allow it it will consume us as the good citizens leave for the country and for areas of less crime . Then the bad areas get worse as there is no one to see them .
So we hire more police and more personal to handle the influx of crime . The city's rep takes a beating as it has , and people don't settle where we need them . Crime takes a big toll on all no matter where .

I'm out in the bible belt of Niverville now. I do want to come back to the city though.

I'm sure there is crime here, but nothing major. The worst thing to happen recently was some teenager tried to get a gun to kill his GF or something. It was in the news. He was taken away by the police.

There are quite a few suicides out here and after living here for 1 year, I can see why..... this place stinks, in more ways than one :-)

Crime makes otherwise good people leave neighbourhoods that need good people in them. Having said that, I would like to move back to the inner city area. You can either live in the city, in an area with fairly decent people, or live outside the city or in the burbs next to dicks... either way, you are challenged somehow.

I don't know why you wouldn't get it, but I and many others do.... people who are leaving area deeply affected by various crimes, prostitution, drugs, etc. I have not experienced a 'drive by' in my area, or heard of any muggings.

People want to live in areas where they can garden in their backyards without fear of attack or a home invasion.

Is it ridiculous for a family to want that?

Like I said, we hope to move back to the west end of winnipeg, maybe.... we'll see. Not easy to sell in this climate.

I was not afraid growing up west of Arlington and East of Polo Park.,... I grew up there and only moved recently. But there is no doubt a crime problem in some areas more than others.... YES, it is all our problems, but I cannot blame any family for wanting to move to a 'safer' area.

The statistics aren't the whole story. Whether crime is up or down doesn't matter, but the perception does. If the fear of crime, even the smallest fear, makes us change or alter our lifestyle in any way, then crime is an issue. I'm not talking about 2 am strolls in front of the Merchants, but if you decide not to go downtown or decide to stay at home and watch TV rather than taking a walk around the neighbourhood because of the smallest fear of crime, then its a problem.

While not wanting to get into a johnson comparison with sun, I, too am a larger male, but I even find myself altering my plans in order to avoid certain areas and situations. I volunteer at my community centre, and will often stop in later in the evening to catch up on mail, paperwork or some of the endless reports for the City and find myself being more cautious. Small things, like making usre I have my keys in hand, parking my car in a well lit place, and all the things that are recommended, but the reality is, I'm at a community cente, which is supposed to be safe.

We do have a problem with crime in Winnipeg and certain areas are far worse than others. Downtown, the Inner City and the North End are 3 areas that will continue to have problems until crime and the perceptions of crime are reduced, and its not the statistics that will determine that.

Size has to do with "perception" for an attacker, not in actual defensive abilities.

If you had a choice of mugging a BIG guy, or an old woman...which would you choose?

I was just funnin' with sun' comments about being "a bigger male."

Not only does someone's physical stature come into play, so does the manner in which they carry themselves. Walking with determination, looking around and making eye contact makes you less of a target.

Criminals will always prey on people they perceive to be easy or weak. Less risk. There are however some exceptional cases where the norm does not apply. Crimes of passion and revenge killings are 2 such cases.
