Traffic cameras.

Its readily evident that alot of the traffic cameras have nothing to do with improving safety and everything to do with improving revenues.

Yes they only catch you when breaking the law.. thats a given.

But the reality is that they are supposed to be improving safety.

Would you be more willing to support traffic cameras if their focus was in fact on safety and that any cameras deemed to be cashgrab cameras were removed?

I feel Red Light cameras are a legitimate safety issue. Keep them in place. My issue is with the speed cameras. Those are a cash grab in my opinion. Especially the van mounted operations in zones where speed regulation is not required. 6am Sunday mornings in a school zone for instance.

What I don't understand is that, with the ready availability of RPGs, why the vans are still a problem.

where can we readily get Rocket Propelled Grenades?

and how much do they cost?

This debate is getting as old as a subway the city is hooked on the fools who break the laws money, As is the province speeding equals safty as I was told when I paid mine . There here to stay no doubt so we may as well get over it , the police should get more of the money for and towards a helicopter from them .
Now there is another thing this city lacks .

No...I don't think they are here to stay...I think they are here till the government can find a more efficient way to steal money.

Three major cities that introduced camera lights have repealed them and removed them from their arsenal. Enough people came forward to protest them, and presented arguments sufficient enough to make those "in power" realize the uselessness of them.

Funny for something so useless why do people get so worked up about them .

I like what they have ended up doing in the UK.
all the backs of the cameras ( and the mobile vehicles ) have huge yellow and black stripes on them.

see those and are still speeding.. perhaps you do deserve a ticket... dont see them, perhaps you should be pulled off the road permanently

I remember an article years ago in Motortrend that talked about statistics in the US showing that red-light cameras drastically increased the amount of rear end collisions at intersection where they were equiped. Basically the argument was that they decreased the amount of accidents occuring in the intersection, but caused more rear end collisions. In effect they were just moving the problem for no real safety improvement.

I have no idea what the statistics are here, but I have seen many drivers slam on their brakes on yellow lights where red light camera's are installed. While I know that you should always be able to control your vehicle and stop in time, many people are not anywhere near skilled enough to avoid the car in front of them at times like this (and probably shouldn't be driving).

I'd be curious to see MPIC's stats for these types of collisions at red-light camera enforced intersections.

Again if you have a rearender it is driver fault , where do they in their stupidity blame the camara was it driving their car . People quit being total losers and start to take responabilty your self for what you frick up . Tired of people who have an excuse for everything in their live.
If they can't be human enough to admit they are stupid then curl up in the corner and go to sleep. They were following to close or not watching the road , this is a no brainer cept for the idoit s driving.

Tail gating is probably the worst thing going on today why do people think they are going to make me drive faster if they tailgate me . To the girl who is probably still cleaning her self up did you enjoy it . Nothing like the brakes when you think all is well is there .
At least this girl will probably not do it again she got taught the best way I now on Saturday on the perimeter , Put on the brakes for 3 seconds fast and watch them sh1t them selves . Funny she stayed the proper distance plus after that.

I'm fine with red light cameras and the vans. To me, its like the casinos, just another form of voluntary taxation. So folks, thanks for helping to keep my taxes down. Keep gambling and keep speeding.

Does anyone know if a ticket is issued of speeding at 4 A.M. through a school zone on a Sunday? That is an issue if that happens! I bet you that does not happen!

This is such a non issue you speed you get ticket, you don't you won't.

I can't argue with the notion of don't speed and you won't get a ticket. But this is not about speeding. This is a cash grab. A new tax. People slow down in their presence and resume their speed as soon as they get past it. Add a few more cameras or allow the police to change locations simply results in a greater tax grab.

The only solution is to put them EVERYWHERE. That is certain to reduce speeding hugely. But that would be counter-productive as the revenues would dry up. They would then have to find an alternate source of taxation.

I don't believe they want more cameras just the ability to use them in areas out of bounds now, which means safer streets and that I for as speeding is crazy in Wpg . The police have robbed the resources they once put into traffic, to keep up with the drug dealers and the perves.

I don't believe speeding is crazy in Winnipeg. But now we are talking opinions. I feel Winnipeggers are actually slow drivers, on average. There are the usual idiots sure, but in general the slowness of our drivers causes more problems then the speeders. IMHO...

Yes the white knuckle 25 klick driver is just as much an idiot as the moron doing 90kmph to get to work cause he stayed up all night watching unlimited brawling .

If they really want to make the areas safer not just collect revenue then they would have huge ass warning signs on the back of every camera and every mobile vehicle.
The truth is they are doing it for revenue.. not for safety. Further.. why is this a change coming from City police? Since when do our police set policy for the city? Where are our members of council?

I was thinking that precise thing. Time they focused on their knitting. Also time to wake up those that are responsible for policy.

The police should get a bigger cut of all tickets to fund and get new stuff Helicopter would be nice so what you break law you pay fine the way it should be .
