OK, it has more to do with rotten, commie, parents, trying to make their kids neurotic, by lying to them about education being the way to succeed to a well paying medium type of job, such as teaching, lawyering, ( which could lead to being crown prosecutors and judges and worst case scenerio politicians, dentistry, Doctoring, nursing, all lies.

Private schools teach twice the material that a public school covers. I don't know if the public schools have all kids in the same rooms , or have rooms for quick and slower abilities?

All I can say is that I am glad that my kids are out of the public school system, and had I had the means, they would have all been put in private school. Thats not based on some religious inclination, just that at least in private school, I would have had some input into what the hell was going on. The private school system has become a bastion of social engineering. Instead of teaching skills which will provide kids with the tools to pursue post secondary education or a career, they jam their socialist values down the kids throat and expect parents to follow suit. Values is what I as a parent teach my kids.

Margaret Wente column March 21, Globe, has a very good report on a U.S. eductional program called KIPP. Aimed at the "poor" market, Hispanic and Black, and it is interesting because of the amount of time the kids put into classes. it appears they are spending an extra 2 hours a day, plus alternate Saturdays, and homework. Has been successful in getting 80% of the kids into college. No information on how many drop out, or what the normal % of going to college is. probably 10%

Interesting that statistics are not available to "track" the successes of our system. The standardized testing was shot down. The most alarming stat I heard from our provincial system is that 1 out of every 4 kids will not graduate from high school. I find that number offensive. At least all 4 of my kids made it through.

They shot down standardized testing for "social" reasons. We have to get our academic heads out of our social asses. Measure measure measure.

The "social" reason was that it might point out shortcomings of some administrators and teachers and that might affect their social life. Isn't it about time the system put the kids ahead of the staff?

One of the advantages I had, was having 3 kids the same age. (Not sure if advantage is the right word, but..) Starting at grade 3, my sons were split up and in different classes, so I got to compare teachers, who were supposed to be teaching the same thing. Needless to say, I was not a popular parent when I contacted the school, saying why are 2 of my kids doing this and this, and the other one hasn't even started.

Classic was in grade 6 when one of my sons came home hating science because the teacher gave the class a science project and told them to make it into a play. When I asked the teacher what a play had to do with science, her response was that she really wasn't into science but was more of a language arts type. Holy sh1t.

Funny thing is that 2 of my kids are in University, studying to be teachers, one in Music and the other in Phys Ed.

We tease #3 son with the saying that "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach, teach Phys Ed."

ugg I am seeing the same thing with the twins... Math was a fun one.. I asked the one teacher.. how is it you can be teaching this, when son in other class has not even started anything close? Her response was..well I am teaching the curiculum so I am not sure how to answer what the other teacher is not doing.... 5 days later... stuff was re-organized in the school. Son number 1 teacher is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered in the school system.. she fixes what is broken on her own initative.

Time for a Jim rant.

(I must preface this with saying that I graduated with a 96 on my grade 12 math exam).

When one of my daughters was having trouble with her grade 7 or 8 arithmatic I was dumbfounded by what I saw in her text book. The book was complete jibberish that actually required another book in order to be able to comprehend the direction the course took.

Absolute nonsense. sh1t that made no sense. Crap from idiots.

One must question why the book was used and who selected it to be used.

Finally, how much money was paid under the table for the selection and use of that particular book? There can be no other reason for the selection.

[end of rant]

on the upside... the math they teach in school now is the math that I did in school when I was a kid and got punished for because it was not the "proper" way.

basically..
what is 32 multipled by 8 =

traditional
32
x8
----
2 *8 = 16.. write the 6 down carry the one.8 * 3 =24 plus the one I caried so I write down 25 for a number of 256.

my way
well I know 30 * 8 = 240 and 2 *8 = 16 so 32 * 8 = 256

yeah yeah I know just break the question down..seems like an logical and easy way to do it right? yup... so easy all my math was done in my head and beause I never showed work...teachers thought I was cheating. When I did show my work the way I did it, I was marked as wrong because thats not the way I was supposed to do it.

Why not just go 8 x 32 = 256? Seems easier than both methods that you used.
