Bernie Madoff Sentenced to 150 years- Crooks Going To Jail 1577783The original line on Bernie Madoff was that he was a respected financial figure gone bad, who built a gigantic Ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars.
As probes into his activities deepen, however, he's morphing into something more: a thoroughly disgusting person who surrounded himself with the grasping and ambitious.
Accounts of an upcoming article in Vanity Fair say his secretary, Eleanor Squillari, claims he was a lascivious old lecher who disappeared in midday for "massages" at any of a dozen establishments around town. He made crude jokes, couldn't be trusted around women, was watched like a hawk by his distrusting wife and reacted to stress by turning nasty.
The New York Post reports that bankruptcy filings show he had a gang of relatives and underlings running up luxury charges on his corporate credit card, handed out millions to relatives for big homes, put his sister-in-law on the payroll for apparently doing nothing, along with other questionable corporate "employees"
Also on the company's payroll were Madoff's housekeepers in New York and Florida, and boat captains for both himself and company Chief Financial Officer Frank DiPascali, who's reportedly seeking a deal with the feds.
There were also nearly $1 million in corporate payments to three Florida clubs -- Trump International Golf Club, the Breakers and Palm Beach Country Club -- as well as the Atlantic Golf Club in Bridgehampton, on behalf of Bernard and Peter Madoff and their wives.
Fox and NBC reported that annother longtime secretary was keeping a low-profile in a million-dollar Florida mansion.
Aside from her Boca mansion, it appears [Annette] Bongiorno did pretty well for herself while a member of Madoff's firm. She also owns a $2.6 million mansion on Long Island, two Mercedes and a Bentley.
..."Annette Bongiorno has millions of dollars of assets that the prosecutors have viewed as a red flag," Robert Heim, a former prosecutor, told Fox 5. "Her luxury homes, her luxury cars are certainly going to be an item for close scrutiny by the prosecutors because she was a secretary and she's going to have to answer why she was making so much money from the Madoff firm and how she could not have known it was a criminal fraud."
