I'll check on Ralph, and see if he isn't busy fishing, get a word in to the present prov. govt. and see if we can trade some electoral-icity for the tarsand. Since I'm at it, what else would you like?

It's Ed, not Ralph anymore.
(Didn't they have a TV show in the 50's?...one drove a bus and one worked in a sewer?)

I was watching some roadwork the other day in my area. I noticed they only dig down about 6-8" before putting down the gravel & rebar (maybe a foot).

I find it ironic that in order to build a driveway, garage or parking pad according to "code", you have to go down at LEAST 12" if not deeper...and this is for a home where only a couple of cars use it, or just sit on it.

You would THINK, they would make the roads better than that. Go deeper, use more rebar, better concrete...whatever is required so that they aren't redoing the entire project again every year (ie. McPhillips Street).

Spend an extra $100k this year...so we're not spending an extra $500k next year.

Is it just a matter of the construction of the roads or is there something else at play? Ages point is well taken, but aren't there standards for road construction in our climates? Do we conform with other North Amercian cities with similar climates? I live in the Maples, so I see the amount of heavy truck traffic on Inkster, which seems to be constantly under construction. Are our weight restrictions lacking? Are there other factors?

We need to do both; fix up potholes and implement rapid transit (those who know me know how I feel about poorman's BRT Laughing ) This is a city of over 700,000 and we are far behind other Canadian cities in term of road maintenance and transit. It's high time we get our shit together and start running this city like it should have been done in the first place.
I'd have to agree with you, I also think that since 80% of Manitoba's population lives in Winnipeg maybe The province should get involved and try make this a top notch prairie city. Much of our infrastructure is in need or repair or outright replacement.

Sorry...I got distracted and hit "send" before I could finish.

When I lived in New Jersey, when they did roads there...they would dig down almost 3' and start building the roads.

I don't know what the real difference was...but I know once they finished a road...I don't think they had to work on it again for quite some time.

There's always road-work going on in any major area...but typically it's because of anomalies or incidents that have damaged the road.

Plus...most of the major thoroughfares in Winnipeg have been deemed "truck routes"...and that should be taken into account when putting surfacing on.

Fix the roads and get the red lights timed with that new invention- computer, and you won't need any rapid transit system at 2 trillion dollars to save 10 minutes going from downtown to the U of M.
Do get rapid transit from downtown to IKEA.

I really wonder why we are concentrating on this area so much , at the rests expense. Yes the south is growing but so can other areas if given the chance . The bus system can be improved without this added expense .
