Do we fix the street mess we have or do we invest in Rapid transit or lrt whatever comes first I think Rapid transit as it is alot less money. The streets need to be fixed too though and there has to be a way to do both. The easiest way I see is the province give the city more of their share of the gas tax towards this end after all the majority of it is collected from Winnipeg and we desearve it

I think most cities would like to see their share of the gas tax actually applied to roadwork/infrastructure in their respective areas. In a city like Winnipeg with a climate that can see such extremes throughout the year , its pretty imperative that roads are kept in decent shape to handle the traffic volumes we have. We've been driving through pot holes for years and years now.

Also if we are and we are I believe going to fix up the Disraeli bridge what is the problem you will find an alternative route . I believe GOM said he lived in TO before he is probably used to this as I was when I lived there. The biggest difference was that their work seemed to go much quicker course some projects went 24 7 till done as the contractor had completion bonus built in and non completion penalties . They worked Sundays and long weekends to finish some of the more criticle work .

The major difference is the 24/7 schedules. They also have such heavy traffic I believe they made certain the roads were built to the very best standards. Sometimes here I feel they take shortcuts to cut cost.

A major problem that we have, imho, is that we are spread out over a very large area and this makes it very expensive to build any sort of rapid transit effectively.
The downtown used to be the center of the city, the hub if you will, but it isn't any longer.
I can't see this be reconcilled. We can't have urban sprawl and a cost effective rapid transit system.
Perhaps we should just concentrate on more and better busses?

I could move it to the top or either side. I do kinda like it where it is. But this place will be a real democracy and if the majority wants changes that I can make happen I will make it so.

Yes welcome back jtf yes grumpy Iam with you on the short cuts it doe's seem like it . I also wonder how much the price go's up cause it is the city or goverment paying , perhaps we need better control of the way things are done a semi private agency to over see these contracts and the way they are awarded .

Doe's the cost of these projects seem to be excessive to some degree the other day I heard 3 million to do 4 miles of Asphalt on a side street . I know cost are up but this seems to be alot of cash .

Didn't even know this place existed until today.

We need to do both; fix up potholes and implement rapid transit (those who know me know how I feel about poorman's BRT Laughing ) This is a city of over 700,000 and we are far behind other Canadian cities in term of road maintenance and transit. It's high time we get our shit together and start running this city like it should have been done in the first place.

Welcome EdWin. This site did not really exist until yesterday.

And yeah, we need to do more of both. We often use a bandage when we ought to be operating.

We have these endless arguments that we pay less taxes than other places, but I'm still not convinced. Perhaps the comparisons should be on what we actually spend our tax dollars on.

Bring over trainloads of tarsand from AB, flatten it out on the roads, have heavy traffic "steamroll" the roads, until finally, seep out the oil and make gas out of it. Kind of like making olive oil.
Result? Nice smooth streets, cheap gas, and maybe less potholes.

I'll check on Ralph, and see if he isn't busy fishing, get a word in to the present prov. govt. and see if we can trade some electoral-icity for the tarsand. Since I'm at it, what else would you like?
