I know areas of the city where they have completely taken out a lane and made it into a permanent bike lane that is never used....

not sure about diamond lanes on a two lane though

I have never seen a diamond lane on a two lane road either.

the awesome part about diamond lanes is LOTS of people just assume Pembina already has them so I can go zooming up the curb lane either in my bus or when I drive and dont have to worry about the long lines of traffic.

but considering how congested Pembina gets especially just before jubilee .. I can certainly see them slapping them in real soon so as to not have MT impacted so heavily.

Yesterday, Tuesday, I took my first ride on the "rapid" transit route...

A friend and I got on at Osborne Station...We were the only ones on the "rapid" transit bus #185 until about 5 more got on at Fort Rouge Station.

On the way back we caught a "rapid" transit bus #161 where there were maybe 12 passengers besides us.

I noticed Bill Menzies with a clipboard counting how few passengers were using his "rapid" transit bus system at Fort Rouge Station around 4/4:30 p.m.

Another observation...

It's been 3 days since the "rapid" transit 1/2 assed line was opened.

While there are plenty of reviews, albeit mostly negative.

But the Freep nor the Sun have published in print, any reviews of the "rapid" transit line yet...

Are they censoring LTEs or are Winnipeggers truly just not reading or writing LTEs anymore?

I was wondering.. with them switching all these routes to rt... then implementing abunch of new routesto half a$$ make up the difference... how much per day extra is this costing us in fuel and drivers?

In 2014, Winnipeg will have a monorail system covering all of Winnpeg, because that is the year it is estimated that our last road will be impassible! lol

Considering that both universities are done classes for the summer, I wouldn't be counting passengers too closely.

I notice a dramatic drop in ridership in the summer on my bus around this time.

Especially on the 161 that doesn't stop on Pembina at all.

Also taking the 185 north bound in the middle of the afternoon is also going to be empty since it runs only between the Osborne Village and the U of M.

How about getting on any of the the northbound routes at 7:30 am and see how busy they are.

Been riding it all week.

Surprised how many people are on the 170 after 9pm.

Between Transitway, stop changes and service changes, this is waay, waay better for me!!

I dont understand why Winnipeg Transit is unable to make a bus priority lane down the center boulevard of Pembina Hwy as the rapid transit link. Cars would have to get out of the way when a bus is coming, priority light changes, etc.

University Crescent is mostly two-lane and it has a diamond lane going Northbound (or is it Westbound?). Actually, when the diamond lane starts, it becomes three-lane, so I guess it really doesn't count as a two-lane. (there used to be a little dip for a bus stop at Univ Cres and Wedgewood, but they extended the dip to become a full third lane from Wedgewood to Pembina so people can either turn off to Bishop Grandin eastbound or get into the far right lane on Pembina to take the turn off to Bishop Grandin westbound).

Doesn't matter how many they count using RT....... overtime they'll never report it as a failure as phase 2 could be put in jeopardy. In about a month or so when the U of M is finished with it's main sessions I expect a dramatic decline in rider-ship. An increase again in September.

Will this 3.6KM line get people out of their cars? Very doubtful.

I think transit could be FREE and there would still be less than an 10% -15% increase in passengers throughout the city.

I haven't taken a bus in Winnipeg in decades. I seriously considered taking it tp Jet games but it is just too damned convenient to drive and park. That said, when they start building on the parking lot I use for Jet games I may reconsider as the bus is at my front door...

The onliest way to make RT more attractive is to complete it. It is a catch 22 right now, but they picked the right route to begin IMO. If it takes some of the congestion off confusion corner and speeds transit through that area it should help attract riders.

I think, from what I've read and heard, is that Winnipeg Transit does not generally manage their system very well.

So perhaps their strategy should be two-fold: continue developing RT; and get smarter about the remaining routes and how they are managed.

The question you need to ask yourself is why were those express buses not running that late to begin with?

There will likely be 3 parking lots being built on around the MTS Centre by next season.

There are a couple of major projects being announced this summer.

- WCC expansion
- Hotel adjacent to WCC
- MPI parking lot development

Seriously? You can't figure it out?

Where are people supposed to get on and off buses?

Platforms? It's possible if the idea has merit. Maybe it is one way with traffic and two way off peak times with ROWs?

Anything is possible...

They have something similar in the suburbs of Bruxelles, Belgium. Although the boulevard there is more than twice wider than Inkster Blvd. The stops are actually situated between shops and stores and there aren't any stops along the boulevard area. The first types of transit had their own two-way area situated on one side of the road, but these have long since been eliminated, making way to wider roads and normal busses for transit.

Diamond lanes make more sense.

Putting a two lane busway down the middle of Pembina along with platforms and potentially pedestrian bridges will shrink Pembina down to a single lane in each direction.

Are you talking about this?

http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=Bruxelles,+Belgium+PCC&hl=en&ll=51.048462,3.731561&spn=0.001027,0.002411&sll=50.869223,4.362594&sspn=0.001038,0.002411&t=h&hq=PCC&hnear=Brussels,+Bruxelles,+Belgium&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.048462,3.731561&panoid=exx4pMhMBxjN7zXG0QDCSw&cbp=12,176.44,,0,-4

The tram is certainly neat. However it isn't exactly rapid as it shares the road with traffic. It would be more of a "mass transit" solution than a "rapid transit" solution.

I could only imagine seeing Winnipeg driver FREAK out seeing a train pull up behind them.

Or, perhaps I was not clear enough... anything is possible.

Perhaps one lane is installed. Have it one way during rush hours and then two way, with "right-of-ways" to manage flow.

I don't know, if it chews up too much real estate maybe we expand the roadway.

Or maybe not.

Anyhoo I'm not advocating it. I'm trying to have a conversation around it...

Anything thing is possible but at the end of the day the discussion was more around diamond lanes and what could be better than diamond lanes as an interim fix to the completion of phase 2 of the south BRT line to the U of M.

A busway in the middle of Pembina serves no other purpose than a pair of diamond lanes, but would now be in the middle of the road adding complexity and width to the system to accommodate for stops and pedestrian access to the stops.

All of the buses would still have to stop at lights like traffic and also make turning left on Pembina that much more complicated as traffic would have watch for buses proceeding through the green lights.

It doesn't really make much sense from the get go.
