How many available snipers are worth the money these days?

Kane is having a great year and has as many goals as Tavares and Ovechkin and more goals than the likes of Iginla, Kovalchuk, Nash, Alfredsson and Lecavalier with less games played.

Winnipeg will do much better developing their talent and finding young or under rated hard working players (i.e. Wellwood, Wheeler etc) to create offense.

The last thing the Jets need is some overpaid "superstar" stinking up the dressing room with their long term $7+ million salary without the offense to justify the cost.

I agree with this, I like the Jets core, let them build properly, soon enough Wheeler and Kane will be making that kind of money anyway. The only UFA I would go after is Parise in NJ, only if he wants to play here

When given a chance, the public will vote with their wallets. Jets tickets have sold out. Donations have stalled for a couple of years now, despite the market being global. Tells ya what people really want.

Ummm, sure. Whatever. Perhaps the lamest comparison yet. Silly troll... Hundreds of millions has been donated. Not everyone is a racist.

I say that we don't bother wasting time with that. Chipman is a LYING SOB!!! He is stealing hard-earned money and putting it towards something that will show little benefit for the community. How DARE he be so selfish??? He doesn't care about Winnipeg, he only cares about lining his pockets and nothing more!!!! Grrr.

This whole thing is a SHAM!! This team, these tax back-room deals, the supposed SHED development; SHAM!!! None of it will ever make a difference to the city in a positive way! You want to talk about crime downtown, well this bilking of the Manitoba tax payers is the BIGGEST crime of all!!! I want this scum-sucking tax scam-artist team gone soon! That money can then be redirected to important things like more Manitoba Housing downtown, going straight into indians pockets because, you know, we DID steal THEIR land afterall, filling up potholes, more police to fight crime because THAT will do the trick yessssssirrrrrrr!

Again, the Jets and Chipman are bag eggs in a piss-poor town. Nobody will support this team come two years from now and then they will be gone again!!!! Let's just get rid of them NOW and save the city more embarrassment!!!!

HHaaaaaaahahahahaa this gave me one of the better laughs in recent sandbox history.

Um, who are you calling a racist? Doesn't that violate the forum's policy?

People are ignoring their constant pleas for more donations. Selinger told them to look global for donations. They have and have virtually nothing to show for it.

Even Canada's very wealthiest are ignoring them. It wouldn't take many of Canada's wealthy to donate all that is needed and more, but guess what? They don't buy into the concept and are voting No with their wallets.

Troll? Name calling is your weakness, not your strength. Too bad you don't realize this.

Do any other Canadian Cities or Provinces provide financial help to their NHL hockey team. And please tell us how they are doing it.
For the purpose of this debate, please do not include any "tax writeoffs for entertaining clients for business purposes" in your reply.
Thanks.

I do not think the Government should subsidize any professional sport team. If the community can not support a team then the community does not deserve a team.

However; I do think that subsidizing youth sports is a better use of my tax dollars. Healthy active kids usually grow up to be healthy active adults, and healthy active adults are less of a burden on the health care system. Kids active in sports are less likely to be active in gangs and crime. Call it preventative maintenance.

Seems we're not the only ones:

"The Liberal government has said it wants to end a policy allowing businesses to write off as much as 50 per cent of tickets and luxury suites for sporting events.

The writeoff, which also applies to other live performances like theatre and concerts, costs the cash-strapped province about $15 million a year.

Senator's president Cyril Leeder says his team operates in a smaller market than other teams — such as the Toronto Maple Leafs — and it needs the corporate tax deduction to survive."

But wasn't that the Liberal Government in Ontario wanted the Feds to end the tax writeoffs for purchasing hockey tickets, boxes, etc for business purposes?

I would not call a tax break to a businessman a subsidy to a team. That said every single business in Canada receives that tax credit when "entertaining" for business purposes.

It really was no too long ago that the deduction was 100%. When the guberment cut it there were cries from the entertainment industry that would kill their business. It didn't. Just like eliminating the 50% credit would not kill Ottawa's team.
