So I've made it here and I'm, of course, going to start with the topic of Rapid Transit in Winnipeg.

I like the Busway plan. I think it's good. It's not a LRT or a Subway but it's a start.

I know that some of you think it's a waste of cash but I don't....then again I'm not a resident of Winnipeg anymore and I won't be paying for it. I'll be paying for Rapid Transit expansion in Vancouver.

Let me know your thoughts. Razz

I'm wondering why we can try that computerized RF system. Its cheaper and might be what Winnipeg needs.

Click here. There are other very large citys using this system for public transportation with great success. I first read about it in the Winnipeg sun a while back.

It would be way cheaper to put into effect than a BRT.

This is a little off topic i guess but I ride the bus pretty regularily. In some buses, there is an automated voice that calls out the street names as we pass them. I've looked for special devices on the signs and on the bus but nothing seemed visible.
Anybody know whats going on there?

Maybe a GPS system? I have that very feature in my car...

yes GPS system. All buses will have them soon, with the expected result being that there will be some stops that will actually have 100% up to date arrival time for buses on digital boards. And further this information will be available online to make it easier to catch your bus when it is late.
This also allows drastically increased monitoring of the buses from HQ to ensure people are not running to far ahead or behind without reporting it.

We already have it here, but no voice yet, just scrolling names on a LED display. Some had TV screens, but they got taken down. I think they were too low, ouch. Now they're testing info boards at the more important stops, showing the projected arrivals of the various busses, just like in airports.

And almost in that order....Burnaby and Surrey in Metro Vancouver.

The Automated Skytrain voice. They tried a guy's voice once but people didn't like it.

I forgot surrey center, New west minster.

But yep, that's the sky train. Have they finished the line that branched off at the Patula bridge and headed up the other way from the original line? I was working there when they were building the line that ran by Labatt Brewery.

Yes they finished that line. I ride it four days a week. My commute would be a lot longer if it wasn't there.

I was just reading the other day about stations and routes that were supposed to be on that line that didn't get built.

Sort of ghost stations, I guess.

They could always add on to it should mass transit usage increases from the high cost of fuel.

Perhaps a glimmer of hope that Winnipeg is progressing into the 21st Century:

And now I await all the "we can't afford it; not in my back yard; I don't like change!" comments to arise Wink

Actually, peeps should be complaining that electric powered light rail transit should have been already built years ago, like when they pulled trolley buses off the roads... Back then, they were already talking about moving the railway out of the city, like nearer to the outer side of the airport.

Trolley buses are not the same as electric LRT.

They're always electric, and electricity in Manitoba is cheaper and cleaner than diesel.
