after hearing all the good press about Windows 7 i felt it was time that i d/l the release candidate.

so after partitioning my HDD using Gparted, i installed the OS. I has some hesitation, as i have some really bad memories of trying to install windows and failing.. miserably.

The install started, and was over before i knew it. say 20min tops.. best of all.. it was painless and easy.

to be honest i am all about Mac's. i like the look, the feel and the features.

Now that being said, i really like windows 7.

i like the task bar.. it reminds me of working on a Mac.
i like the new start menu. Its not as big and clunky as XP.
i like the transparent windows of Windows 7
i like the widgets.. oh sorry i mean "Gadgets"
i even dont mind IE8. But i replaced it with google chrome almost right away.

the only thing i dont like is the fact that my gadgets sit on my desk top. i kinda wish they had a home.. something that when i wanna see them i can mouse over and make them appear.. otherwise they are out of site out of mind. sorta like.. dashboard on OSX.

It's ok....I've been running with it for a few days now.

So far, there are some things I don't like about it...

For one, it's too much like a mac.
You can't turn the Start Menu back to the old 95/98/me/2000 non gay style....

Other than that....it's pretty much a Vista clone...all the stuff that was left out of Vista is in 7...

So, to sum things up...if Vista made you scream and hide....your not going to like 7.

Can you not put the gadgets in a folder and have a shortcut to that folder on your desktop?

BTW, I shouldn't badmouth 7, it's not "that bad" but I'm still a little annoyed that I can't make it look less like a mac....stop making Windows look like a mac, it's not. Let mac's be mac's and let Windows be Windows!

If I wanted a mac, I'd buy one.

[end rant]

Actually, I'm a bigger fan of Vista then I was for XP....I find Vista much easier to administer, and it borrows some of the security model that Linux and others have employed. It's much easier to manage multiple users on once machine....from a sysadmin perspective anyway.

To keep little hairs out of your keyboard, try wearing pants when using the computer!

I'll save GOM the trouble:

I've been running Windows7 a few days now.....I went from Windows2000 directly to 7, so I bypassed XP and Vista. I found it kind of funny that it did not come with any mail program, I thought Outlook was always part of it.Another thing I did not like is my beloved tools bar is hidden, I had to google to find out how to set it up so the toolbar could be seen. Other then that so far so good, its just very very different!

Outlook has never been a part of Windows.
Outlook express has, which is a scaled-down version...though Windows 7 is promoting "LiveMail" instead now.

I use a Mac so I haven't tried Windows 7 but have heard good things about it. Most of the things I've heard don't have much to do with what I think is important in an operating system (speed, stability, compatability between programs and hardware, etc) and it's mostly been about features that are similar to those found on Macs. But they aren't the things that make Mac OSX good either, just little additions to the system. I don't use most of the little functions in Macs that get much press so I probably wouldn't use the Windows 7 ones either. But I like that all my hardware devices work with all my software and new software integrates with old software correctly without needing to tell the system anything, and that there aren't a ton of programs running in the background that I don't want taking up resources.

If Windows 7 doesn't crash, doesn't slow down 6 months after installation like XP did, doesn't have problems with hardware and software compatability, and stays stable after you've installed a ton of programs on it, then I think it's a good operating system. Provided it keeps computer resources free to run your programs instead of using them to run itself. But I don't think we'll really know how good it really is until people have been using it for long enough to see if it stays at this level after installing and running a lot of software.

Did anyone go to TechNet last week?

MS was handing out one year TechNet subscriptions complete with download rights to pretty well everything.

A very good deal indeed!

It was $299 to attend the two day event (for IT Pro's) @ the convention centre.

Sadly, it was the last stop on the Canadian tour. But they did announce that they were looking to come back next year, in the fall...maybe not freezing cold December next time! lol

Tons of useful information for developers, implementers/deployment and infrastructure support.

I sat through the deployment and application compatibility portions, which look really encouraging.

Windows 7 can run (properly equipped of course) a virtual copy of XP (for free) for what they call "XP Mode" so if you can't get a/some apps to work in Win7, you could then install them onto your virtual XP machine instead.

Finally some neat stuff is starting to trickle down to home users. :-)

I have a new laptop that came with Win 7 preinstalled. It boots quite fast (almost like Ubuntu), but I also already have a complaint and maybe someon more windows literate can help me with that:
Older version of MS Office (e.g. 97) came with a handy launcher where one could place all sorts of shortcuts in a compact way for quick launch. Later version of office did not have that, instead Windows (e.g. XP) had quick launch bars where applications could be grouped and that could be placed or docked anywhere. I cannot find any related function in Win 7, and the only way to launch an application is to work through nested start menu, desktop icons, or cram them into taskbar at the bottom. All very unappealing - how can I place application launchers elsewhere on the desktop?
