Lookee here...This is posted on the city of Winnipeg website:
"Aboriginal persons, women, visible minorities and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to self-declare in their covering letter."
Hmmm, a white non-handicapped male is discriminated against.

The fact that I'm not allowed to work in a government position or vote in elections is not really discrimination...I knew that before I moved here.

And I'd like to add that if you do declare Aboriginal and don't look like what your interviewer thinks is Aboriginal be prepared to be called a liar or asked to prove it. Happened to me as I am fair skinned, blond by birth but father was 100% native. That was when I left the interview with the person's name, title and supervisor's name and title to file a complaint, which never went anywhere as it was a he said/she said situation. That was the one and only time I declared my "status" because I don't personally agree with the type of employment equity that is used by the City of Wpg as it is more of a quota system than anything else. I would rather obtain a job because I am qualified, period.

And you are absolutely right about the quota thing. I worked for a private company and every month in staff meetings the VP of HR stood up and presented stats on how many women and visible minorities we have. And if our percentage slipped were put on notice. That generally meant making employment selection choices based on criteria other than education and experience.

Yes and a freind of mine did not get a job with the city as he did not have the qualifacations for it even though being native . So some times it is not a leg up .

Pav, being a visible minority, handicapped, female or aboriginal should never be a leg up but an addition to the skills and qualifications that enable the person to do the job properly. Declarations of employment equity should be made only after the person has been awarded the job. This is the true intention of employment equity as opposed to the quota system.
