You mean its optional? I have a passport, so I don't see an urgent need for this for myself right now. I guess they will all be phased in eventually?

says it 100% optional... nothing about it being phased in, when this was first being batted around 5 years ago it was for everyone...but I guess maybe the privacy concerns made them change their minds?

That has nothing to do with your drivers license though, right? All driver's licenses are moving to a new one piece format next year. I guess they still won't be sufficient to meet the demands of the US DoHS.

Will I get one of these new ID cards? No.

"Manitobans with passports may also want to have one of these wallet-sized cards because they can be carried all the time and will allow spontaneous visits by land or water to the U.S.

Manitobans will be among the first in the country to be able to obtain an approved, affordable alternative to the passport for travelling to the U.S. by land or water. The Manitoba card is now in the final stages of approval by the U.S. government.

“The new card will be offered to Manitobans on a voluntary basis and we expect it to be a popular choice. Besides costing less than a passport, the new card will have several security features and be more convenient to carry,” said Chomiak, who is also minister responsible for Manitoba Public Insurance, which is delivering the new program."

" It will not be acceptable for entering the U.S. by air or for entering other countries."

hrmm.. starting to seem rather useless...

"The security features of the EIC will be incorporated into the Manitoba driver’s licence when the province moves to its new one-piece licence. At that time, drivers who already hold an EIC will be able to convert it into an enhanced driver’s licence (EDL) if they wish. Subject to U.S. approval, the EDL will also be an acceptable alternative to the passport for entering the U.S. by land or water only."

They've been testing these cards for a number of years with Transportation companies. Truck Drivers, Bus Drivers, etc. were able to get special ID cards to help them cross the border faster. This was back in 2004

Your Canadian Passport will be all the documentation required to enter the U.S. eventually anyway.

And like you posted Deank, you can't use it to enter the U.S. by air...so it's not really worth it to me.

Call me paranoid, but upgrading to the new license sounds like your just asking for more government supervision and possible identity theft due to the RFID chip embedded in the license card. It all gets entered into a huge database, and who knows what can happen to it from there (think of the "Terrorist No Fly List" gone bad in the U.S.)

Suspect why would you not want an RFID chip... unless you have something to hide.. Suspect

oh.. FYI.. the only reason I want one is.. I am too lazy to do the passport thing.

It's not the government I'd be afraid of finding something...it's the geeks smarter than the government who hack the system and steal all my information.

Just once I wish the geeks would hack in and do something worthwhile...like add a few extra zeroes to the end of my bank account statement Very Happy.

heh.. I have enough zeros at the end of my bank account.

I could use a fair number of 9s in front of it.. heck I would settle for ones in front of it.

Close! I was working on technology that'd let me impersonate anyone when I crossed the border.

Mind you, in order to impersonate Imelda Marcos, I'd need to start building a shoe collection...

I have priced the cost of a new passport versus a Uzi gun, and I am going for the gun to get across the border!

Can you obtain an "international" driver license that would be usable in Canada and wherever you travel? Or do you always need a Manitoba license?

For the US & Canada...a driver's license is issued by the State/Province where you live (I'm not sure about other countries).

If you live in either for more than 30 days, you are supposed to apply for a new license. There is no "International" license that is recognized by the US or Canada.

For Commercial drivers, however, in the US...your CDL is issued within your State, but is actually Federally generated.

Personally, when this thing is going to cost $50 for those who have a driver's license and $75 for those who don't and a passport costs $87, I think I will keep my passport current as not only does it get me into the US but any other country as well. I would far sooner keep my passport and give the cash to the feds than to spend extra on something that has the possibility of being hacked or scanned. If you don't keep this new card in a protective sleeve while carrying it around with you, there is the opportunity of your personal info being stolen. Not worth the $50.00 IMO and that is over and above the cost of a driver's license.

Will this ID card make it easier to get into bars?

rosencrentz

It should be easier in the long run as the provincial government will be making all the bars widen their doors, because of the size of this license!
