I believe that we've had a 'reunification' policy whereby we bring in all the relatives of an immigrant, most of which are not employable.

Hopefully, this will close that loophole quietly.

I don't think it is too much to ask that the average immigrant to Canada speak understandable English. Seems like a reasonable demand.

Mixed feelings on this one.

So many people will advance the argument that if this rule had been in place, their great grandparents, grandparents, parents, or even themselves would not have immigrated to Canada, and I can probably make that statement. That being said, there were no government funded ESL classes for my grandparents, or tax funded support groups, or government housing. They worked at whatever jobs they had to to pay for themselves. They came here as refugees (DP's was the vernacular of the day) and they weren't readily accepted or welcomed with open arms. (They came from Austria-Hungary during the First World War, and many "bolsheviks" were interned)

Now, the rules have changed, immigrants and refugees receive massive support from the public purse. If unable to speak either official language, they are basically on welfare, receive training and housing until they can enter the workforce.

Times have changed, so perhaps its time to change the rules.

They are proposing a name change. They may call it the Canadian Nauseum for Human Rights, to better reflect the public sentiment towards it.

And no, public sentiment does not refer to Brazilian wax jobs and no, you can't have one...women only.Very Happy

I would rather they speak basic English BUT understand English
fully so they can read the papers they are signing,
the street signs when driving and can write a decent sentence.
Not understanding the language is worse than not being
able to speak it. A translator isn't always available.

Possibly, although I think they may just be idiots using the concept they can't understand as an excuse.
