so the city is going ahead since the province has said do whatever you want...
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/city-to-go-forward-with-smoking-ban-at-athletic-play-sites-118898589.html
"While health experts and anti-tobacco activists urged the city to
enact an outdoor smoking ban in all public places, Steeves said the
bylaw will be limited to athletic fields where youth are playing sports,
playgrounds, school grounds and public pools.

That means Winnipeggers can still smoke on patios and adults can smoke on the sidelines at an adult sporting event.
"

okay so.. how the hell are they going to enforce this selective crap? The enforcers will carry around video cameras and catch people in the act? Christ I can see it now, local referees being forced to go to court to testify what type of game he was reffing?

We don't have to make it that big of a deal. Many people will police themselves. Others will require a polite "ahem" to butt out. It's the select few that will be militant about it that will require a stronger nudge.

Don't expect the police to race up to a soccer field any time soon responding lights and siren to a "jerk smoking" emergency.

Perhaps we can dispatch the cadets?

I have kids who play soccer and if I see some asshat light up while on the sidelines, you better believe I will say something. It is a joke that pot is illegal yet tobacco isn't. What is up with that?

I'd pay money to see the debate. Smile

As an ex smoker I am all for this. I wish they had gone further and extended it to patios and also made it that they must be a good distance away from entrances to buildings.
Nothing worse than walking through a bunch of smokers to go into a store, bank, theater etc.

Apparently, 40% of all litter is cigarette butts.

Surprising when you consider fewer and fewer people are smoking nowadays...

no so surprising when you find out that statistic is not true.

I wonder if you are at an adult sports game and there are children present, how will this bylaw affect the situation. Thankfully the soccer league I belong has banned all smoking at all outdoor games on both the player's side as well as the spectator side.

Really? I am amazed at all the people I still see smoking. I have a few friends who are still smokers and I doubt they'll ever quit. I have a friend who has asthma and is a smoker...talk about being a die-hard.

I hate hearing smokers b1tch and complain that they can't smoke by doors anymore. I don't care if you smoke, but you've got to understand - you smell like s hit.

Get the flork away from me and my loved ones.

So many of my friends and family have quit in the last 10~ years. Very happy with that turn of events...

The last announcement I recall hearing from the guberment is smokers are down to the 20-25% level. Can't recall the exact number and I'm too lazy to research it.

Don't get me wrong, I generally believe that smokers should be taken out and bludgeoned, but, why enact legislation that is almost impossible to be enforced.

This was orginally passed by the Board of Directors of Winnipeg Youth Soccer, and it was stupid, cause there was no way to enforce it.

It's pretty much a self-policing deal imo.

Much like booze, as a matter of fact. You don't see people drinking out of brown bags much anymore eh.

Funny story there in that a couple of years ago, we did have a complaint of a parent/spectator doing exactly that. How dumb!!

(We usually just go out to someone's car during the half. Smart guys keep it in coolers.)

heh...pretty soon there will be a boom in barn construction just so that people will have a place to go behind to smoke.

Or put "it" into a thermal coffee cup or water bottle. We always offer the ref a brew after the game when we tailgate in the parking lot after our women's games. For the most part the ref refuses but we do have a couple who will accept the offer.

There was a ref who was dismissed because he used to "tailgate" before the games.

Well. It makes more sense to bribe the ref before the game eh. Smile

I know of some coaches/CC execs who apparently think its perfectly fine to drink at kids games.

As the manager of the team I have stated that I would prefer the ladies not to drink before the game due to insurance liability. If a player gets injured and has to see a doctor and there is the smell of alcohol, her insurance through the league become null. As well, someone with alcohol in the system will make that player less effective. Most of the refs that do our games already know that we have coolers in the back of our vehicles so they/we know how the game is going to go anyway without a bribe.

wait a second here... something we all missing..

Hmmm, next thing you know, there will be bars in hockey arenas. Anyone been to CanLan lately (formerly the Highlander)

The indoor soccer complex in Saskatoon has a bar. The Coverall in Headingley used to have a bar (not sure anymore, haven't been there in years). Even the indoor complex at the U of M was designed for a restaurant and bar.

What's next? Bars in curling clubs?
