"We just wanted to give something free to strangers and promoting [sic] literacy."

Church said about 20 people were involved in the project, breaking up
into groups who set up the 'circulating libraries' in bus shelters on
Main Street in front of the Centennial Concert Hall, at Osborne and
Gertrude, Broadway and Memorial, and Portage and Bedson in St. James.

Unfortunately, the books never made it into the hands they were intended
to reach -- Winnipeg Transit cleaned out the four shelters within hours
after concluding the books and bookcases posed a fire and safety
hazard.

All four shelters had become dismantled by 10:30am on Monday -- hours after they had been placed there. I've never seen any city service work that fast!

There's been a lot of negativity surrounding this (see: Free Press comments [lololol]) but when it comes down to it, there were hundreds of books, cushions, reading glasses, blankets, and art for the public to enjoy since libraries are about as public for everyone as the legislature building is..

I don't see the harm. This just makes those homeless shelters more comfortable for the down and out. And isn't that what Canada is all about?

Beg to differ with GOM. First, the definition of "homeless" is somewhat different in Winnipeg. -40 degree weather sees to that. There are shelters for those who need.

Bus shelters are for everyone, and quite honestly, they're big enough shitholes as they are without trying to draw more people to them. There are many agencies dealing with street people and massive $$'s going into it, we need not use something as simple as bus shelters for anything else other than what they were intended for.

Can you say facetious? I was gonna use the sarcasm font but figured the sarcasm was plenty evident. Smile

The bus shelter that I saw (Osborne and Wardlaw) looked kinda cool.

They put cushions on the metal bus seat and had boxes of books there for anyone to take.

Hell, they even put up a picture on the wall and a vase with plastic flowers.

The only downside as far as I could see was that people might miss their bus when engrossed in one of the free books.

You know, lately, its sometimes hard to tell with you. Not sure if its mellowing with age or early onset Alzheimers. (on your part, certainly not mine)

But, I'm defnitely relieved.

people bust the windows in these shelters just for fun.

They are made to be flame resistant for a reason. Adding non flame resistant materials takes away from that reason.

Have fires been a problem in these glass and metal shelters?

I would assume there would be if there was an abundant amount of flammable material just sitting in them.

Never mind the morons who spit on everything, puke on things... or just knock sh1t over to be asshats.

Books.
They were giving away books.
This has nothing to do with the homeless question yet it keeps coming up..

One of the four had a couple blankets that they added because the location (Centennial Concert Hall) is known for having the homeless occupying that area. The rest of the shelters had books and cushions.

Books.. for reading.. and cushions.. for sitting.. as you wait for the bus.

Not very difficult to grasp.

Then whats with the blankets, scarves and articles of clothing?

This is a public bus shelter, a place for anyone who wants to get out of the wind and rain waiting for a bus. They are designed for ease of maintenance, hence, no cushions, no flammables, etc. If Transit wanted books and clothing and cushions, surely they would have incorporated that. What gives these people the right to put this stuff out there? Many already are shitholes and don't need anything else to make them worse.

It is considered a public space and this social experiment proved that it is not a public space at all. Don't ask me why ONE group chose to include blankets and scarves, while the other THREE chose not too.

If you have a problem with people leaving blankets and books for the public to take, then I don't know what else to say to you, or why I would even bother saying anything more..

It most certainly is public space, which means that we share it, but does that give license for anyone to deposit anything they want?

No one said you had to say anymore, that was your choice.

BTW, its was GOM who made the comment about homeless, albeit, facetiously.

hmmm...on that note.. I do have some older furniture that I would love to get rid of (now that awesome rosie gave me some usable stuff). It would cost me $10 or whatever to call the city to come pick it up off my curb.. but I DO have three bus shelters nearby...

Could a charity use the furniture you no longer need Dean? If in decent shape there are a couple agencies that will find a good home for the stuff.

I have some stuff that I will need to find a home for: washer, dryer, fridge, freezer. All are in working order.
