Imagine Gail Asper running for mayor. Maybe she could get us a new city built. Change the name to Global City or CanWest City. She can get her brothers to chip in, maybe convince some other billioniars to donate some coin to Winnipeg. Hell even get RUSH to donate a portion of T-shirt sales to fund the new City.

She could also hire the guys from "Queer Eye" to design the city. That way we would get lots of vacationers from Vancouver and San Francisco.

I'd put Gail in the same league as Sammy...very minor...maybe even bush league...pretty much non-starters where it comes to professionalism..to use a sports analogy.
Sammy brought nothing to the table and neither would she. IMHO.

Why cause they are not conservative or cause of who she is , she was right downtown is a mess and city hall has done nothing for 30 yrs to really solve the problem. Just keep giving developers Cart Blanche to build suburb after suburb with no real plan for the maintenance of those suburbs .

Lots of blame to go around for this.

Glen Murray, Susan Thompson, Sam Katz, Bill Norrie, Steve Juba would all be to blame.

Well we cant really blame the mayors of St.B, St.James, West K, Elmwood, etc.. They were trying to do what they could with their city, which was nothing much till the mid 70's

Sam Katz is the our best Mayor in office! he works his butt off trying to do what he and the council feel is in the best interest for Winnipeg.
It is easy to criticise , but if you would bother to ask your councilor, you would then have the understanding of what city council was thinking!

The problem with this city is it lacks the vision to see past mediocer and secound best . We are fixated on being someone else . The city is what the people make it .

Then maybe we want to be mediocer. If its what the majority of Winnipegers want, then perhaps could the minority just sit back and enjoy the ride?

SPELL CHEQUE- will someone check the correct spelling for mediocer, and secound? I do not have the forums permision to do that anymore! That was taken away with my thumb's down restricyion!

When someone talks about "vision", I assume that this is a hypothetical state, because who is to decide what vision is correct? City Council with Mayor Sam have a vision, Gary Doer and the NDP have a vision, our federal Conservatives have a "vision", BUT cheque the forum postings! Everyone has complaints about whatever any bureaucracy tries to do! That is human nature! We set up so many rules and regulations, and anyont trying to make a change gets their chance after way too much discussion.

If I didn't no better I would take Miz Points comment as a criticism! Sam Katz is our elected Mayor, and Sandy Shindleman is a real estate developer. They both have development of Winnipeg as their objective. Katz would welcome any and all, for an increase in desperately needed income. He would announce the proposal and then wait for the usually positive feedback from Winnipegers. lol!
Did you know that in Calgary there was never an increase in local taxes, because the City was flush with money because of the huge increase of homes, apartments and business taxes.
Winnipeg doesn't get that. That is why the suggestion to put condos in Assiniboine Park. Good idea , but dropped after all the commotion! See , City Council listened.

If this is what Winnipeggers want, then that is a result of:

a) Not being given much over the years to provide them with higher expectations of what a city can become and who they can compete with; and

b) Being brainwashed over the last several decades by bushleague councillors that Winnipeg can't strive to become one of the top notch cities in the country.

I'm telling you; when you leave Winnipeg and move to other cities that you thought were dumps and then realize what a fresh batch of civic politicians can do to revive not only the downtown but the stature and reputation of the entire city, you realize that it can be done in Winnipeg, because Winnipeg deserves to be so much more than what it currently is. Build ontop of what you have since there is no need to completely start from scratch.

Plus civic leaders who don't have their heads up their asses helps too! Maybe I'll try and find Shammy down here in Phoenix, his second home, and put the screws to that screwball myself! Very Happy

I don't think Sam's backed himself into a tax corner that he won't want to stick around long enough to need to deal with. Property taxes are going to need to go up, and business taxes can't be cut anymore unless we want to cut infrastructure spending. He's sort of been doing things that seem okay at first and you can get away with for a bit but eventually they will catch up with you. I'd be surprised if he wanted to the mayor that these costs caught up with.

For the life of me I cannot understand why our civic leaders don't push the Province to take school taxes off the city's tax bills.

If, indeed, they did remove it, I very much doubt that anyone would object to a tax increase.

However, when we get it up the ass from the school board every single year, taxpayers are pissed with increases....especially when there is a weak case for the increases.

Taxpayers are always pissed when they see how much they are paying. People don't like property taxes, school taxes, income tax, or sales tax. Because they see them. Normally all that cutting them does it shuffle things around so we're still paying the same amount, just in a less visible form. The city could probably ask the province to fund the school tax and the province could just tranfer some infrastructure money into a school funding program. Which would be fine, but then there would be far less infrastructure money. If that's where they took the funding from. Either way we are paying for it somehow. Guess we could increase the PST. But then you've got the rest of the province covering the tab for winnipeg's schools so it would more likely be from a pool of money already dedicated towards use in the city. My guess would be infrastructure.
