Can't really say as I don't assess performance but i'd guess fatigue might set in, then again if you train yourself into it maybe not much.

many studies have proven that there are serious consequences, especially in healthcare.

Not all but, by working 16 hour days, 130 of them every year it is possible. Just out of curiousity how many 16 hour days do you put in??

....ahhhh....I put in about 16 hour days everyday...the rest of the day I sleep.
But seriously, depending on the work being done, it can be a breeze. On the other hand, an 8 hour shift in some jobs is impossible for some.

Heh..don't forget, nursing is a job that requires very little heavy lifting.

lifting however does not require quite the mental clarity that dosing patients does.

I was speaking metaphorically actually. Remember, only a very small percentage of nurses work in the OR/ER fields.

Heh, even in the ER, nurses are just sitting around waiting for doctors most of the time anyway....just like everyone else. Smile

wait a second...

then lets kill two birds with one stone

eliminate all but ER/OR nurses.. and to get to see a doctor for anything else you have to pull a 4 hour shift on a ward taking care of patients.

win.. time passes quickly when you are busy so your wait to see a doctor wont feel that long
win.. less money spent on nurses and it can hire more doctors.

Hey, you know, once nurses are allowed to write their own Rx's I bet there's be plenty of oxy-addicts who'd line up to "volunteer" for a while Razz

not being an oxy addict I dont know for sure but cant imagine that even free oxy is worth catching a 90 year old mans poop.

There are an awful lot of nurses that'll take great exception to the notion they don't do "heavy lifting". Nurses have one of the most physically demanding jobs in a hospital, especially those working the wards. Lifting patients is very hard work.

I worked the odd double 8 hour shift in my younger days.
By hour 13 or 14 I was not feeling too good.
I just don't know how these nurses who work 12 hour shifts do it.
The working days must be a complete loss from a personal point of view because I would think they are just working and sleeping. And then they would have to sleep a day away just to recover from working all those 12 hour shifts.
I do not understand how they come out ahead time and/or family wise.

Nurses don't do that stuff (lifting only and cleaning poop) any longer. Where have you guys been? They call in others to do that stuff.

Working 16 hrs a day is not a problem if you have 4 to 6 days to recuperate. Besides, its not like you are on the go for the fullshot. There is an awful lot of quiet time, perhaps up to 6 hours per shift.

There is no reason for those shifts. If the rest of society can function on 8 hour shifts, don't see why nurses are any differnet. Its a just a crew that needs to be dispatched. And if poop and liftiong patients are some sort of reasonswhy they should get paid more may I suggest they use bed pans, and a couplemof extra hands added to the already sets at the bedside. ( or is that the job of orderlies- I mean lesser paid )

There are workplace safety rules regarding lifting! I cannot imagine any female nurse being required to lift more than 50 pounds , 22 kilos, and male nurses , perhaps a little more.
The same would go for postmen/women and all jobs.
Back troubles from lifting would cripple workers comp, and then workers comp would go after the businesses.
No one lifted me when I was in the hospital, and I am at a svelt 145 kilos! lol

I have visited people in the hospital a few times.
I did not see any nurses sitting around except for the ones eating lunch in the cafeteria or doing paperwork at their desks..

There is a clear lack of understanding what nurses do during the course of a shift. Sure there are nurses aides and orderlies and related support staff available and very few nurses will be lifting Rosen into the tub but their job is a very difficult and strenuous and stressful nonetheless.

Don't underestimate the difficulty their job entails.

"health care aide" "nurses aide (Na2)" "orderly" are all the same thing, just in certain areas of work they are more likely to be called something else. ie in the OR they're commonly referred to as ordierlies while in other departments they call them NA2's

Agree, on the underestimate, but lets not overestimate what they actually do.
