You can do the entire job yourself.
All that is required is to have a permit and to get the work inspected and okayed.

Most of this work is just manual labour...breaking up a little concrete and digging a hole for the sump pit and exposing the main sewer line.

Nope. Read the release. Work MUST be done by a city certified contractor.

worse yet.... Its not a done deal and still has to go to full council floor, who knows some councillor might introduce changes. So its another month before its official.

Regardless of whether or not this passes, I think it's high time I got one installed in my basement!

But the problem now Mantha...

You will end up paying a premium to get it done.

Then the program will cost a hellava lot more than it should.

The city is now saying, it appears, that the cost in some cases may be as high as $5,000 for this work (they're paying 60%/$3,000).

This is a windfall for plumbers and electricians....gougeville here they come.

ummm....what?

so you're going to install a sump pit, and feed it into the main sewer line, which is going to be backed up, which is why you needed the sump pit in the first place.

Nope. The pit holds the sump pump which discharges outside and onto your lawn (supposedly).

Have you ever had plumbing work done? You're paying a premium regardless.

I'll just be paying a slightly larger premium.

yup.

"This is a windfall for plumbers and electricians....gougeville here they come."

definitely. There is always markup when you allow the contractor to go and purchase the materials.. generally what 10% if not more? Now they will be marking up even more and adding in all sorts of after hours fees and such.

Very poorly planned and even more poorly executed idea.
At the least they should have put this on last wednesdays council agend instead of worrying about spending time asking the province to let them keep their seats while they run for MLA..

Let's put it this way, whether the province is subsidizing or not, there's going to be a high demand and low supply for these products and services based on the flood threat alone.

No matter what the province would have done, I'd be paying through the nose for this, imo.

I doubt that Mantha.

Most people simply expect the government to help them out and are rarely proactive about putting something like this in.

lol, I'd like to do the entire job myself..just not looking forward to dealing with cast iron piping...and not sure how much of my floor to open up and where...as my laundry room door seems to be right on top of my floor drain.

it's going to be a dog's breakfast I tell ya.

Yes...I know...that's my question...why does the main sewer line need exposed?

It only needs to be exposed if you are installing a backflow valve. You have to run a line from your floor drain to the sump pit for the pump though.

You might as well do it properly since you're so close....

lol, my floor drain is at least 2.5' - 3' or shoulder length deep (I know this because yourglings think it's fun to drop toys down it all the time)

That could be a lot of digging if I were to install a sump pit if it's supposed to tie into my floor drain...

I have one of those houses that has no sump pit, or backflow valve installed. My gutters used to be piped into my basement and went into the floor drain! (which I assume is connected to the sewer line, about 2.5-3' below the floor) so when it would rain, we'd have what sounded like a torrent of water gushing into the floor drain.

I've since disconnected and re-routed the rainwater so it stays out of the house.

There is a clean-out protruding from the floor as well, although I suspect that's probably where I'd break up the floor to install a backflow valve.

If you've got one of those big round catch basins you can use that as a pit. (increase the capacity of the pump though).

If your sewer pit is that deep 2to 3 feet then use it as a pit but be prepared to have the pipe abs coming out of there running to the floor height then head out side .
you could get away with the stopper if you have a pit this deep . If you want pm me your contact number and I can explain it better .

Always makes me laugh when people pay lawyers more then plumbers but fuss more about plumbers . Probably cause they think they can do it them selves hahahah . sorry I have heard so many horror tales from so called experts in plumbing it makes me laugh .
They have their papers which they have earned just like any other trade . And they desearve a living just like any roofer or jack of all trades general contractor . Hahah

Being stuck at home, I have been waching the DIY television network, and Holmes on homes and other programs and am better understanding how houses are being built and not up to code. My whole house that I am in was built by someone who had no clue, and wouldn't buy a $30 book on how to build!

With the recession of the 80's came a wave of "carpenters" and "contractors" that formerly were accountants and office managers.

These guys did a lot of damage I'm afraid.

Have to laugh after I wrote that their looking for someone to teach shingling at Red River . good Idea as it is time all who work on Houses proof what they know and stop some of the bs contractors out there . Not that it stops them all but helps to keep them honest .
