http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2011/01/25/mb-sump-pump-subsidy-manitoba.html

"Winnipeggers will be subsidized up to 60 per cent on the cost of installing sump pumps and backwater valves"

"Katz expects residents in as many as 3,000 homes will take advantage of the offer" - I hazard to guess it'll be a few more than 3000!

"The program, subject to approval by city council, is retroactive to May 1, 2010"

Nifty.

Guess I have no reason anymore to put off having one (or the other) installed!

i can tell you right now it WONT be more then 3000 homes taking advantage.

We simply dont have enough qualified tradesmen that are sitting there on their asses doing nothing right now.

...maybe we could hire some from down south?

They are looking for work....and I need a sump pit/backwater valve installed...so, tender your bids!

lol!

3000 homes

lets say we have 3 months. If we ignore the fact this is retroactive...that would mean they expect 1000 per month or 33 per day. I Just dont see it as being realistic.

I highly doubt all the installs will be done in 3 months leading up to the flood threat time.

For the entire length of the program, I suspect there will be more than the 3000 including the retroactive peeps from last year. Keep in mind, there's no announced ending date for this program yet either. I haven't seen any fine print stating that it's only in effect until a certain date.

Feel free to speculate! Very Happy

Wouldn't it be better to take this money and put it toward fixing our sewer system properly?

apparently the wording shows that they EACH figure on spending 1 million per year... PER YEAR.. sounds like a permanent subsidy/

What a bout all the new houses put in since May.... can they now claim a rebate?

AFAIK, these have been part of local building codes for at least the last decade or longer. (My folks house was built in 1989 and has both. Was told both were part of the code when the house was built.)

So...I would say the most recent houses will not get a rebate.

ahh yes.. from the press release

New home construction will not be eligible as sump pumps and backwater valves are required under the building code.

seems to me that leaves it open to a lawsuit.

after my rebate comes through, then launch your suit.

Please and thanks!

meh.. no amount of properly really exists in a gravity bases system when the place you are dumping the waste to is 20 feet above where you are.

We just bought a home in Windsor Park a couple months ago. How can I tell if I have a backwater valve? Is it something that is in plane sight? Please excuse my ignorance!

Apparently Princess Auto has some (for now).

Was there earlier and someone was asking for them...the worker said sure and took him off to find it.

I was talking to a new rep that I was training tonight, and she was saying that her husband installs sumps & that all of the sump/backwater valves need to have permits from the city before installation in order to qualify for rebate. The folks who had them installed last year, and are trying to obtain retroactive financing would either a) need to have done it with the go ahead from the building inspector at time of installation, or b) will have to have the building inspector come in NOW to inspect work that was done, which is additional cost.

How many free-range building inspectors does the city have to run around giving thumbs up to sump pits? The word is very few.

This isn't going to be a total flop. Nope.

heh like I said in the other thread

"Should also hire a couple more inspectors temp to inspect the work done."

About 5 years ago, the cost to install a b/w valve and a sump pump was about $1,700.

How does that compare with today's price?

As I understand it, the city is figuring on the price being about $3,000 already.

Even with inflation, I reckon that price is way out of line.

Lets pretend its $2000 right now. BEFORE the city announced this program.
Lets also pretend that it is still technically $2000.

Dont think for a moment that people "with money" wont be paying more on the side to get the work done earlier.

Thats fairly cheap as prices go for both if it is too cheap they are cutting corners though in most cases .

Nope. I had several (6 or 7 as I recall) estimates and all were within a hundred of each other.

Does anyone suppose they will allow you to do any of the work yourself to save some money?

I can jack-hammer up a concrete floor and expose the plumbing for the contractor, all they'd need to do was come in, direct me where to open up and return once I've got it done. I can handle back filling and a small cement pour afterward to finish the job.

That would be up to the contractor
..heh.. there is going to be so much work you do a good enough job and maybe they will hire you Smile

You can do the entire job yourself.
All that is required is to have a permit and to get the work inspected and okayed.

Most of this work is just manual labour...breaking up a little concrete and digging a hole for the sump pit and exposing the main sewer line.
