Harper will be filling 18 vacant senate seats before christmas.
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/2008/12/11/7705626-sun.html

NPD says..
"
NDP MP Paul Dewar said the move to "stuff the Senate" proves the Conservatives have abandoned democratic reform.
"What Harper is practising is old politics, desperate politics, and quite frankly, pathetic politics," he said. "He has thrown out any credibility for the Conservatives in terms of being honestly democratic and wanting to do things differently. "

Hasn't Harper tried once to reform the senate and his legislation was watered down? Or am I mistaken?

I'm happy to see that Harper is filling those vacant seats....and I doubt EliMay and Dijon will be on the list....and I'm sure Paul would be okay with the appointments if he was included. Wink

His reforms keep getting rejected by the senate. Once the reforms are passed, those that he appointed have to step down and run to get elected.

What's stopping the provinces from holding elections to select Senators, and then the PM appoints those elected?

At this point in time, he should fill those vacancies with Conservatives and not concern himself with whether they were duly elected or not. If they were...fine...if they weren't...try next time.

I like his approach better... fill the seats but make them sign a document saying they will resign when/if senate reform happens.

I'm not so sure we don't need a house of sober second thought. I only have a problem with senators being appointed.

ELECTED, EFFECTIVE, EQUAL.

That sums up how our upper house should be. 2 term limit should also be enforced.

I sent an e-mail to the PMO's office. I suggested that he should appoint my wife as a senator, and that the riding of Winnipeg North could use someone in the government who can do something to help Canada. Our MP Judy just isn't cutting it and we cant seem to get her out.

I wonder if Harper got to read that e-mail.
I'd be shocked if he appointed her, and I'd be happy. She would probably be pissed off at me and I'd end up in the DOG HOUSE.

There are some vacancies, but not in Manitoba...

BC = 3
Sask = 1
Ont = 2
Que = 4
Ont /NB = 2
NS =3
PEI /Nfld =1

Hey LD, I live in Judy Whatshernamewitheveryletterinthealphabet's riding as well. You mean her attending every ethnic event is not good representation? What about whining when a bank or business closes? I thought she checked with you before she opened her mouth, because I can tell you that she sure doesn't talk ot me.
