How can 10 cm of snow be classified as a "snow storm"???

Too bad the temp. over here is so high... With all the rain we got this week, we would have been under 10 feet of snow by now...

Seriously, as soon as it snows the sirens (fire trucks and ambulances) are going off like crazy, ...in my area at least.


Yesterday morning while @ work, right as the large snowfall began not 2 minutes later the entire downtown area is filled with emergency vehicles going crazy...sounded like the Queen was back for a visit.

Ha! They got snow in the Yukon and Nunavut. So much for global warming... Next thing you know, Santa will have to finally put winter tires this Christmas Eve.
(Or else he'll get a fine...).

Geeeze, it went from zero snow to this overnight. That is one frick of a lot more than 10cm of snow... Traffic is a beyatch. Mostly due to the drivers, but much due to too much snow and little to no snow removal.

really? Where? Cause it sure as hell was not the places that are usually first.

The snow plows must be going around in circles...

heh.. it was a new guy.. they told him just do this block so keep turning left and you will be done.

I know we got a fair amount of snow overnight but my short trip down Taylor and Stafford just now leave me with the impression that our snow removal efforts have been extremely limited. Is it just me or has the city done a downright sh1tty job?

OK, the full, true doughhead answer is:
The City has a written down way of looking after snow ploughing dependant on how much it snowed.
DeanK I am sure can find it and post it.
Yesterday they were talking about the level it had to snow before the plows would be sent out to clear residential walks.
I did not pay attention because in Charleswood there appears to be no residential walks. Try 311 for the real answer, and stop posting on weekends, please. it is annoying having to keep some hilarity going 18/7!

So I guess they'll get to plowing priority 3 (residential) by May, 2011???

actually...on my way to work this morning, i found myself behind an Escalade from California.

At Portage & Donald we stopped at the light.
The lady in the passenger seat was busy taking photos out her window.
When I looked where she was aiming...there were two guys with reflective jackets on, holding a couple of pedestrians back while they shoveled snow off the walkway to clear the area. And as they finished, they waived the pedestrians to cross.

I found it interesting on many levels...that 1) the city workers did such a thing...2) that the city workers were actually out shoveling (turns out I saw many more of them as I continued down Portage), and 3) that the woman found this "photo-worthy" of her trip to Winnipeg.

I guess it's not much different than a Pegger going to California and taking photos of someone selling oranges on the side of the road.

last i heard...downtown biz WAS city...

but i don't know...they had black winter suits on with yellow reflective stripes

i saw about 10 of them with shovels down portage.

but even so...the fact that ANYONE was out there was impressive to me.

and yeah.. downtown biz has their own mechanical sidewalk cleaners in addition to all the guys they have working for them manually clearing snow/picking garbage up.

Drove my daughter back to Brandon on Sunday, and in spite of some shitty weather, I have to compliment the Highways crews for keeping No 1 clear. The right lane was clear right through, both ways, the the passing lane was clear from about McGregor to Wpg on the way back. The drive home was a lot easier than the trip there, as it had stopped snowing and the sun came out, but it turned cold and windy.

Now, if you want to complain about urban snow clearing, try driving around Brandon after a snowfall. No sign of any equipment, even on the bridges. (Remember, they have hills in Brandon too)
