Around 12,000 military veterans are interred in the Field of Honour at Brookside Cemetery and Winnipeggers are now invited to learn about them.Public and school tours begin Thursday at 10 a.m., with two tours a day. The tours continue until Nov. 10, ending with a short service at the Teardrop.

I sure hope lot's of children get to do this. It is always incredibly moving to see kids talk about their experiences researching the brave lads and lassies that served Canada and sacrificed so much.

unfortunately... not many will. My kids and I will be going on a self guided tour this weekend though so I got mine covered.

My husband's grandparent are buried at Brookside and a couple of his relatives are vets who are buried there so we "visit" the veterans portion of the cemetery once a month when we are there. It is quite the history lesson to see some of the names that are there and to Google them to find out more.

But I agree with Dean, most teachers won't be making this tour available because they are limited in their classroom budgets for field trips and teachers are partisan to the fun field trips like the zoo, Fun Mountain, and stuff in May and June to get through the hot days.

Perhaps we can get Gail Asker to volunteer so we can fly in kids from all over Canada to visit our cemetery.
