I think it's ridiculous that Chretein is being compared to the likes of Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill or Albert Schweitzer. Absolutely ridiculous.

Other politicians appear to have been on the list for no real reason other then many many years of service. But she is probably just apologizing for the whole Conrad Black thing.

No one is comparing him to anyone! Google Chretian or better yet read his 2 books, and you can see how he has served with honour to his beloved Canada.
He deserves the honour, because he is one of the few Canadians who has known the Queen. In her 1973? visit Chretian was the Minister who spent the week with the Queen taking her around.
But Chretian has been in virtually every ministry in his career, and successfully led the Country for 10 years.
Great Man, but as usual the forum naysayers are there and are complaining and haven't bothered to ask Dr. Google about this person.

Certain events mark the notoriety or popularity of a politician. Dief was the cancelling of the Avro Arrow, Pearson was the creation of peacekeeping forces, Joe Clark was for losing office by trying to increase gas prices which the Liberals went ahead and did anyway, Trudeau for his flamboyance, finger and "Just watch me" response to the FLQ crisis and Mulroney for his rendition of "Irish Eyes" with Ronald Regan. But what is Chretien's moment, choking the sh1t out of some poor prick that got in his face. Thats an image none of us will forget. That is deserving of some sort of recognition.
