Eagle Eye 2/5

I can't imagine sitting through this drivel a second time. The film tries to overcome its major shortcoming, the story, with over the top action. Many cars were destroyed in the making of this film. Everyman Shia Lebeof makes for a good slacker type, but he's too good at scraping with security guards to be believable.

You can see the plot unfolding from a mile away. Some of the gee-whiz graphics are neat, especially when our heroes see their entire electronic lives unfurled before them on multiple big screen televisions. Some of the scenes with the missile-firing UAV are cool.

Nowhere near as good as, say, the first Matt Damon Bourne film.

I was thinking when I heard Paul Newman had died that we don't seem to have the quality hero-actors we used to have. John Wayne and Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford. I know I'm probably not giving the last generation enough credit but...

Time for another one of those healthy and hearty FUCK YOU's to DeanK.
John Wayne represented everything good and right in the world. Not matter what the script said, John Wayne could never die. He represented every kid's dad and was what every kid wanted to grow up to be. (I have a particular resemblance to Rooster Cogburn) The world came a lesser place when John Wayne passed on.

My wife and I were having this same kind of discussion when Newman passed. We've been brainstorming for actors/actresses with the same type of "class" these others had. A few names that came to mind for us:

Gary Oldman
Lief Shriber (sp)
Colm Feore
Brendan Fraser
Christian Bale
Will Smith
Cate Blanchett
Gwenyth Paltrow
Matt Damon

There are others who are developing into better people...but had rough starts:

Angelina Jolie
Brad Pitt
Mark Wahlberg
Nicole Kidman

The thing to keep in mind about the initial post (with Newman, Wayne, etc.) is that we're looking at them now after a lifetime of work. And the "publicity" factor of the 60's & 70's when these actors were getting started is not what it is today. Tabloids were not as devious or prevalent...and actors generally worked FOR a studio, more as an employee than a star.

There are other actors who should be on that list. Tom Hanks comes to mind.

Yeah, him too. But he does fall into the previous "they don't make them like that" category.

W.

4/5

Doesn't really shed light on the public impression that most of have of Bush, as an underachiever born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Excellent acting from the cast, including Josh Brolin as W. It leaves out a lot of information, but is still over two hours long.

This is one movie I want to watch. Just for the acting, you know.

I tend think acting is not what it once was cause of the over use of computer effects and mind numbing violence, not that Iam a movie critic but the few I have watched to much of the impossible and science fiction . But yes John Wayne was not a great actor but he was everything good in the world .

Changeling 4/5

Based on a true story about a woman whose son is abducted and told a different boy is her 9 year-old son by the police. She protests, and is thrown in the nut house.

The film is another directing triumph for Clint Eastwood, who isn't slowing down at age 78.

The film is very good but the story is sad and pours on the feelings of despair perhaps longer than needed.

I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood. But the trailers for this film are not at all inspiring. Maybe that's a good thing. IMO, most movies that have great trailers and are hyped up never seem to live up to expectations.

Like "The Mask". The trailer showed all the effects. The rest of the movie was boring...

That sounds like a renter for me...I hate going to see tear tearjerkers in the theater...

Hilary Swank is seriously hot. I don't much care for Kidman. So sure.
