The Feds are wanting to dump the long form...actually not dump it but make it voluntary raher than compulsory.

It is a bit draconian to always threaten jail imo, which is done every time I understand.

Greg Weston from Sun Media told of this type of harassment on TV. He was threaten with this 17 times no less.

btw, seems the data collected is questionable anyway, as several thousand people claim to belong to the Jedi Church, as an example.

Thoughts.

If the statics have any validity and will help run the country more efficiently, where's the harm in responding to the long questionnaire once every four years (if selected).

If the stats are questionable, then nuke it...

I believe the issue is not whether the questions help or not, but whether it should be mandatory (threathening jail as it is now) or voluntary.

whats that members of first nation xyz... you say there are 8900 on reserve? funny we count only 250 here is your cheque.

Those people who complain about their "privacy" concerns are probably the same that spend all day on Spacebook or are yacking about their pathetic existence on cellphones in public places.

Over twenty years ago I had the pleasure, yes pleasure, of being a regional supervisor for Stats Can up north. We had some unique problems to deal with in terms of the census forms but I found, more often than not, that many first nations folks wanted to comply, to have their life recorded. We dealt with a higher than average rate of illiteracy and semi-literacy and I ensured that those who wanted to participate had the assistance that they needed.

I found that contract to be very rewarding, not necessarily in the monetary sense, in that it taught me that many who lived in very isolated communities wanted to be counted as part of this country.

yeah but times have changed.. now their is active campaigning by people on reserves to not fill them out.

wheras the Frenchies actively campaign to ensure their members put french down even if they dont really use it at home because they realize that it might get them more money down the road.

Perhaps, if everybody wasn't threatened with jail, there'd be more compliance.

And, btw, what use is knowing that thewre are thousands of Jedi?

I see that the Free Press is having a similar poll.

Apparently 65% believe that the voluntary form will compromise the quality of the data., which had me confused.

Wouldn't a person be more inclined to lie ( and screw up the survey) if they were threatened, as opposed to doing it voluntarily? I sure would be.
