Buy a fogger and fog the hell out of your property. There ain't much he can do if some blows over to his place.

dont bother with the fogger.

Just buy liquid malathion. Mix it in a water can and water your lawn during the day when the skeeters are hiding in the grass.

kills the ants too.

You might be right, but why chance it?

Remove the buffer zones all together and be done with it. Pretty soon the stock pile of the chemicals that the city is using will be gone and cannot be re-ordered as it is no longer made. So getting rid of the buffer zones will deplete the inventory that much faster (you would think the tree huggers with all their education would have come to that conclusion).

They still make Malathion, you can buy it at any hardware type store.

I think we should all get some of this stuff...supposedly it works quite well...

I would say leave the buffer zones as they are. I'd opt to not fog at all if it was possible, but obviously that's not going to make people happy.

I think those of you who assume that it's just hippies and paranoid freaks that make use of buffer zones should know that some people actually get acutely ill when exposed to malathion, even with the windows closed. I have multiple chemical sensitivity and every time my town sprays (every Wednesday throughout summer weather permitting), I get sick. I get headaches, fatigue, sore throat and ears, nausea, loss of appetite and general weakness all over. It lasts 2-3 days, then I have about 4 days of almost normal health and it starts all over again. I didn't even realize my town was spraying until this happened a couple weeks in a row. I did have my windows closed because it was nice and cool in the house anyways. I'm registering for a buffer zone and I doubt very much that any of you can honestly begrudge me that. I'd rather have west nile once this summer than malathion toxicity every week.

"I'd rather have west nile once this summer"

you only get it once then you are immune for life. But the West Nile skeeters have not even started yet so all this spraying is merely for nuisance mosquito control. When they are spraying for West Nile.. all buffer zones cease to exist.

west nile can be one heck of a disease tho... so be careful what you wish for.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is one hell of a disease too :p I'd like to see the city actually give those natural approaches a shot. As soon as they pull out the malathion guns, they kill all the dragonflies as well. They really never gave it a proper go.

" They really never gave it a proper go"

They wont ever be able to. Councilors (like it or not) are slaves to the electorate and when each councilor gets 100+ calls day in and day out for 5 or more days straight.. they eventually will listen and make the trucks roll, regardless of what our expert says.

I have mixed feelings on this issue. I hate the fact that chemicals are used but I hate mosquitoes and I have quite the reaction to a bite...my son has inherited my sensitivity except his is much worse. My son has eczema, allergies and a skeeter bites him and within a second he has a huge welt. There has to be a better way to rid us of these pests.

Anyone who is "allergic" to malathion should close their windows during the fogging! Is that too hard to figure out? The really bad thing about fogging , is it has allowed me 4 days to talk to my wife, as we sat outside watching the deer eat her hosta plants in Charleswood. In 19 years on Wellington crescent , we have not had that chance except in early spring and late fall, to sit in the back and talk!
One time 2 years ago when DeanK and a dozen other fine posters came over for a forum barbeque, MizP was so hostile to the mosquitoes , all the mosquitos left the area for the day. I think it was that MizP was cooking up a storm, and using malathion as her choice of spices?

Did you miss the part where I explained that our homes are not air-tight and I get sick with the windows closed? Furthermore, malathion toxicity is NOT an "allergy" it's being particularly sensitive to something that is toxic to ALL humans. Most people just don't notice acute effects at the levels they apply it. Many people also don't notice the acute effects of cigarette smoking, alcohol on unborn children and many other things which are now indisputably bad for health and should not be forced on anyone.

Anyone who is "allergic" to or does not like mosquitoes should wear long pants and long sleeved shirt, if you are a baldy then a hoodie will protect the top. A bit of muskol on the hands and the cheeks, and voila no nuisance at all. And no other animals will be harmed in the process.

I have an auntie that is so allergic to DEET her hands swell up just from touching the skin of someone else who has it on. Accidentally breathing it in damn near kills her.

MCS is not recognized as a chemical-caused illness by the AMA, WHO or ICD I understand, but mosquito bites are easily recognized as the cause for allergic reactions by many. Just sayin'.

Personally, I don't think it's CAUSED by chemicals. I think it's caused by the same thing that makes us gag at the thought of eating sh1t. It's instinct. Some people's instincts are weaker than others. My body knows that these chemicals are harmful and reacts to deter me from being around them. It's just too bad I'm more evolved than the rest of you. Just sayin'.

All allergic reactions to mosquito fogging are mental!
That is a proven fact, from a study done by The Malathion Manufacturers Associations!

In 1974, we were living on Scotia Street, and the mosquitoes were incredible because our property had so many trees. We bought a blitz fogger to clean out the yard , and the neighbour next door told me his wife was allergic to the spray, and would I tell them in advance! We did, abut he came over and told me the spray got into his house.
So, I bought one of those electroic Zappers, and my neighbour came over and told me the electronic Zapper was affecting his wife!
So I threw the old bag into the red River, and 2 problems were solved at once!

Well, honestly, I wouldn't object to you tending your own property next to mine. I do object to the city pandering to the will of the self-gratifying, uninformed majority that seems to think they have a RIGHT to taxpayer covered poison to control nuisance mosquitoes and that they have a RIGHT to force that poison on people who don't want it at taxpayer expense.

What I would do, as a civil neighbour, is let you know that the stuff bothers me and hope that you'd respect that by warning me before you spray and avoid over-doing it. Everybody seems to be so narcissistic these days. It'd be nice if neighbours could make some reasonable compromises for the sake of community.
