Customers of Manitoba Public Insurance may continue to experience some inconveniences because of a problem with the company's computer data bank that has been on-going for several days.

Officials said Saturday that MPI is making progress in returning its computer system to full capacity.

Last week, Autopac agents throughout the province were unable to access the company's online system. By Saturday, 140 agents were able to conduct full business transactions online, officials said.

MPI agents are able to serve customers with paper transactions. However, MPI officials asked anyone with non-urgent business to wait until the computer system is back to full operating capacity.

Customers will not be charged late fees or overdue interest, nor will policies be suspended, said MPI.

Officials apologized for the inconvenience and asked anyone who has questions to call their call centre at 985-7000 or 1-800-665-2410 (toll-free).

Of course, none of their agents have pens so they cannot fill out the forms by hand.

Also, they cannot do simple arithmetic without a calculator eh.

And tell me one bussiness that can easily switch back to paper , goe,s to show how over reliant we are on these boxes.

The news report indicated they were doing the renewals by hand but it was taking a very long time. Understandable.

What is not understandable is that they did not have a back-up system in place to take over if their systems failed.

The reports that I heard said that agents were simply turning people away.

In some cases yes. My son just happened to be going for his drivers test that day. He passed (yay???) but then they said sorry we cant give you your license can you come back tomorrow or actually call first and see if the computers are back up?

They have been saying for some time the system is getting old and needs to be up dated have they not .

Which is a ridiculous joke. Having worked on and with systems far far more complicated then what MPI is using the costs they always indicate as being involved with their upgrade plans are out to lunch, substanially.

You nailed it with the word lunch.

The additional and exceptional costs for such an upgrade for this group is because of the costs they have for their lunches. Fresh lobster flown in from the coast isn't cheap.

Nah they dont fly it. that would be crazy and take away unions jobs. I heard they have a specially trained group of people who train the lobsters to walk here and they walk with them as an escort

Perhaps if they spent money where they should, rather than donating it to the rights museum, they wouldn't be in such a mess.

Perhaps if the Government allowed private insurance to compete, we wouldn't be talking about MPI.

Agreed. And, without MPI, there would be one less donation to the rights museum. Private enterprises refusing to donate to the museum greatly outnumber those that have donated, by many magnitudes. The private sector is voting with their wallets and they are saying NO.

Give it a rest Triniman. There is a thread for your CMHR rants in here.

I could never figure out why MPI does so much marketing, its not like we can buy auto insurance elsewhere is it?

Government operations that have no competition, find bureaucratic ways of wasting taxpayer money and should be prevented by law to advertise, etc, except in ways that aid motorists.
If they are going to donate monay, it should be to the city to repair roads, etc not to a Museum.
What are they donating to the Museum? How can that be allowed under legislation?? What a waste!

They do it to justify themselves to the public. try to make the public feel like MPI has their backs.

Manitoba Public Insurance said Wednesday the computer problems that it has been experiencing since last week are now solved, although people are still being asked to visit their Autopac agents in the evening.

“As a cautionary measure, during the peak usage hours of 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Manitoba’s 306 Autopac agents will have limited access to the Autopac On-Line (AOL) system,” stated a release issued by MPI Wednesday.

“Autopac agents throughout the province now have full access to Manitoba Public Insurance’s computer system every evening at 5:30, and on weekends. Customers, who patiently have waited to carry out their transactions, are encouraged to visit their local Autopac agent during this time.

“Customers will not be charged late fees or overdue interest, nor will policies be suspended, and no non-policy financing agreements will be cancelled (sic) due to the processing delay,” the release stated.

Seems despite their announcement the system is back up, they cannot provide the level of customer support they should be.

The people running this organization should be replaced.

I'd love to see the NDP and their appointees get replaced.
