"With federal transfer payments flat this year, and with the economy still sluggish, the province does not have a lot of new money pouring in, so Wowchuk's department is looking for ways to boost revenues, including raising user fees.:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2010/03/18/mb-spending-cuts-budget-manitoba.html

Sounds like that's the plan, never mind cutting back on spending when we don't have any money, just raise taxes and user fees during a "recession" or a "depressed economy" and high unemployment!

Oh boy...I can't wait....

This is going to be better than when the new phone book's come!

How about a stricter enforcement of anti littering laws and make it a big fine so the goverment gets lots of cash.

Good idea, particularly those who dispose off cigarette butts into the environment should pay up.

How about outlawing white elephant projects and putting a moratorium on the creation of unionized, government jobs?

Gum. Chewing gum. Fine those who spit their gum (not gums) on sidewalks.
Law already in effect here in Trieste.

Government "enterprises" (golf courses, parks, campgrounds, pools, leisure programs) to be operated on a self sustaining basis.

I know of a couple of PRIVATE golf courses just outside of Winnipeg which charge about the same senior green fees as the city of Winnipeg .
I am pretty sure they don't get any government subsidies.
And IMHO they are in better shape too.
(Of course it does not help that the city-run courses now have to subsidize the white elephant known as 311 either). Which userfees and taxes would you like to see go up? Icon_cry

If you were factor in the "overhead" costs involved in city run golf courses and the loss of tax revenue, you'd see how expensive they really are.

Likewise, the City has a massive infrastructure for booking and maintenance of fields, yet the fields are sh1t and the booking system is a joke.

Always those damn unions ruining everything eh Trini? Why not just a moratorium on creating new government jobs? Unless your trying to tell me that the unions can create their own jobs?

I don't know why I didn't think of that when 35% of the employess at my job where laid off after 9/11. The union should have just walked into HR and told them no and presto...no layoffs.

How about dropping CPP and OAS for child killers as a source of new income?

Some twit says: “We can’t be selective when it comes to human rights,” Wamback said, adding that Olson is still behind bars and “that, we should be thankful for.”

I say we CAN and should be selective. My view is you lose all such rights the nanosecond you are convicted of crimes.

When you've served your sentence you regain a) your freedom and 2) your rights.

Seems quite simple, and reasonable, to moi.

Do you know any specific "white elephant projects" which you feel the government(s) should have never been involved in? Which userfees and taxes would you like to see go up? Icon_wink

IMO: Its not that unions are bad. Its the forcing of workers to pay union dues when they do not want to belong to a union which is bad.

Exactly. No rights. They made a decision to relinquish their rights when they broke the law.

Therein lies the problem. Got to love that Charter of Rights. Trudeau is probably still laughing over that one.

Just like you like to blame one man and one party for all of Canada's problems?

I do not blame any one more then any one else that is where you are wrong , I did not like PET either. But I tire of people putting every thing that is wrong with Canada at his feet , while their beloved party supported it .
