nope..nothing to do with reducing it to one entity from two.

I just dont understand why we bother with our own force. It seems fairly obvious that the mayor and council is not in any control of the force so I am womdering why we bother with the headache.

they aren't supposed to be in control of the police force.

the police force is not supposed to be a political "tool" to wield and control...they are supposed to enforce the laws as they are prescribed...and protect the law-abiding citizens.

keep the politicians OUT of law-enforcement...and everyone will be much happier.

the people we elect are indeed supposed to be in control of the police.
By in control I mean things like.. Mandating neighbourhood beat police. Mandating a budget, mandating rules that the police have to operate under.

I do not mean tell officer A to go arrest person B.

You can "elect" the folks who are supposed to be in charge.

If they are negligent of their duties and responsibilities (sounds like what your complaint is) then they should be booted out of office.

If there is no procedure in place to boot them from elected office due to willful negligence or disregarding responsibilities then all we can do is wait until the next election and hopefully a new, competent, candidate will win that seat.

Its not that they are negligent. Its more of a tail wagging the dog thing. And I figure if there is no real reason why we have our own police force, then why bother with the hassle?

Accountability?

We can fire our police chief whenever the situation calls for it....kinda hard to fire the head of the RCMP when they f*ck up....

I like in the USA how some places ask their citizens to elect their police chief/sheriff, if they perform poorly they get a new sheriff via elections. I'd like to see that for judges too. Elected judges, magistrates can be appointed but provincial judges should be elected. Federal judges should be elected by our MP's and make it non-partisan. no party whips.

I would like to see elected prosecutors. Then maybe they would start prosecuting for the major crime(s) the perp committed instead of dealing them down to next to nothing.

You have never seen the bs that creates south of the border. And where would this affect the police as there money is seperate from the judiciary. Some of the courts are federel funded and some are provincle .
