but they will still take the land... and simply convert the existing building.


What an extreme disappointment. That brand new building could have been a shining jewl for First Nations. It could have been a great example for people that urban reserves can work.

Hell, did you think about the money it would have costs us taxpayers to build, fill and maintain a 10 storey office tower?

JTF... was not taxpayers money "per se" going into it. It was a coalition of bands using existing money that they have and trying to save money by building it all in one place and consolidating services.

but they only get X amount. Its not like the can build a building and then the government goes.. ooo.. new building.. here have some more money.

The money to build this comes from existing money.
The money to maintain it comes from each band involved kicking in a portion. A portion that if done would actually be smaller then the portion they would have to spend on their own.


Think of it this way. If you go into walmart to buy a package of toilet paper. You are getting the same deal as everyone else. Now if you go into Walmart representing 100,000 people and saying we would like a deal ot purchase 200,000 packages of TP, you are going to get a deal. slight, very slight of course. But you will still get a deal/.

yes I do believe that they would not be asking for more cash to run this building.

Would they perhaps be asking for a little more to build it? Maybe... but then again what building gets built these days without some level of government kicking in a little more.

This is just buildng a building and then looking for something to fill it...even some natives have seen it for this...those guys that pulled out said there was no benefit to them at all. It would be just another hole in the ground in which we throw gobbs of money.

Read a little closer at the article. Long Plain cheif is complaining that it would have offered little benefit. Not that it would have cost. I strongly suspect this is just another power play to get more from his fellow bands (and dont blame him one bit)
