Maybe not...

"There are a lot of unknowns, but we have a very good working relationship with the First Nation," said Jerome Mauws, East St. Paul's chief administrative officer. "We see this as a very good opportunity."

Agreed! Good Post!

It shouldn't take too long for the NIMBY's to start howling...

And when you think about it...a urban reserve outside city limits in the nice hamlet of East St. Paul would make a perfect location! Razz

This is where the province and all Capital Region municipalities and reserves need to huddle and decide upon what get's built where. We are concerned about sprawl and business setting up just outside the city limits, leaning on city services but not paying taxes.

A Capital Region plan is in order.

Very true.

As far as I know, a urban reserve wouldn't pay any taxes, so weather it's inside or outside the city, it wouldn't make much difference. Of course...I could be wrong. (...waiting to be corrected)

he is just the chief admin officer... they seldom represent what the people want..

also.. how did the urban reserve idea work out for West St Paul?

and yeah... so taking a place that is mostly people living there and turning into some sort of development ( other then housing ) is that really whats right for the area? AS GOM says a capital region plan is in order.

You are correct. They should pay a grant in lieu of taxes.

yeah unfortunately none of those ones that are succeeding are run by MB parties...there seems to be a huge difference between MB and other provinces in these aspects. I can only think it has to be the leadership

but for the record the Indian and norther affairs website aint gonna publish a story called.. Urban Reserves, a disaster in the making....

An "Urban Reserve" located in the "Rural Municipality of East St Paul." I believe that to be an oxymoron.

Let them have it The one in Saskatoon is doing pretty good , after all the Springfield Municipality has taken alot of Winnipeg business and taxpayers already . This city doe's not desearve it , or the success of it . The prejudice and mistrust that these bring out of people is amazing .

I think the mistrust is deserved when you consider things like Terry Nelson, the treatment centre scandals, Louis Stevenson.

I think most of the denizens of the sandbox well know what an urban reserve is. And I dare say are well familiar with the two local urban reserves and the Saskatoon urban reserve.

Not so much exclusively a federal thing me thinks. The reserve will be paying a grant in lieu of municipal taxes. So it is very much a local thing as well.

yeah and unfortunately unlike a local development going in and the locals having at least some input into it, and Urban reserve is not required at all to consult the surronding municipality.

Yeah, maybe. That does not give me any confidence. You?

Look what happened in Roseau River. No, there must be consensus amoungst all stakeholders. Just like any other development...

Approval of reserve status is not automatic. In order to get land designated as a reserve, federal policies require that a step-by-step approach be taken to address the concerns of everyone involved, including municipalities and environmental authorities. The Department's Additions to Reserves/New Reserves Policy requires environmental site assessments prior to any land acquisition by the federal government. This serves to protect both Canada and First Nations from adverse impacts.

It's in the link I provided.
