The brakes have been slammed on an effort to let drivers speed up in River Heights.

A city hall committee decided last night to keep the speed limit at 50 km/h on a long section of Grant Avenue, despite a recommendation by traffic engineers to raise it by 10 km/h.

The city centre community committee voted 3-0 to maintain the 50 km/h limit between Kenaston Boulevard and Stafford Street, after Coun. John Orlikow (River Heights-Fort Garry) said he prefers the status quo for safety reasons.

Coun. Jenny Gerbasi (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry) said she and Coun. Harvey Smith (Daniel McIntyre) agreed, because of residents having raised concerns about schools, day cares and seniors in the area of the major regional route.

Grant's speed limit is 60 km/h west of Kenaston, and east of Stafford.

Well isn't this special? The long list of bozos running this city-asylum never ends does it? I grow weary of people like Gerbasi and Orlikow governing with their heads so firmly planted in their ass they wouldn't recognize common sense if it bit them on their said respective asses.

We deserve the government we have.

Simple tax grab. If they raise the speed limit they won't be able to pepper that stretch with camera vans and speed traps, handing out tickets to people going 63 km/hr. I know a few people who don't live in River Heights that have been nailed entering that stretch both from the West and East. There is almost always a photo radar vehicle parked just east of the rail road tracks for eastbound traffic, and one just west of Waverley for westbound traffic.

Apparently, their logic is that the cars are going 60 at the present time and if the speed was to be raised, the cars would be going 70.

It appears that they are okay with us going 10 klicks over the limit.

Logic schmogic.

When the new mayor and council comes in the first thing is to order a comprehensive review of all areas with excessive speeding tickets to determine why people are speeding and if that area warrants a raise in the speed limits.

What they should be voting on is changing the speed limit for the stretch of Kenaston from Portage down to Grant.

Make that at LEAST 60, if not 70, and get rid of that stupid traffic light for the crosswalk.

it actually makes sense that it is 50. Its a residential area. so until the residential is removed.....

Here in Italy, they want to raise the highway speed limit from 130 to 150 kmh...

well everyone, even the Italians, know that the best thing for mankind is to wipe out as many Italians as possible.

A block of empty houses does not a residential area make! LOL

So, in spite of the fact that the people that are the "experts" employed and paid by the City recommend the increase, CRyin' Jenny, the old fart and the upcoming socialist know better and they decide to go against expert recommendation. Why have paid experts when we have commie bastards?

Why are we all in such a rush to go where . Speed traps keep taxes down so I do not mind them . How much time are you going to really save tell me .

Rush? Not so much. Common sense? Yup. Frankly doubt this is about speed traps and some modest revenue. It is more about fear of change and some real bozos running this city.

Tell me Pav, if 85% of the drivers along that stretch were to drive 40kmh would you advocate lowering the speed limit? Imagine the revenue those dastardly speeders would generate!

It is time we ran this city with common sense as the common denominator rather than this horsesh1te manner we do now.

Precisely, what the hell do elected officials have to do with speed limits. If those 3 a$$holes had their way, we'd all be walking.

The bright side is that we have official sanctioning of being able to go 10 KPH over the posted limit.

The reason given for not increasing the speed is because it is rtecognized that traffic flows at 10 KPH over the limit and it is now accepted.

It'll be interesting to see this played out in court...as it sure will be sometime in the future I'd bet.

So, if you get a speeding ticket, you'd have to drag Gerbasi, Smith and Orlikow into court to testify on your behalf??? At least they'd be useful doing that.

No...just produce a transcript of the decision.

Go there this weekend, and please provide pictures of residents beside the street, crossing the street, or even simply walking near the street.

I drove down both Inkster and Leila this week. Both streets are remarkably similar to Grant. Except Grant even has service roads.

Guess what the speed limit is on both Inkster and Leila...

I don't see why it can't be 60km/h. I mean, pedestrians need to use as much caution as drivers do. There are as many bad pedestrians as there are driver, and I don't think an increase of 10 km/h is going to make that much of a difference in the long run.

I gotta agree. If a careless pedestrian walks in front of a 50kmh car he will be every bit as dead as when he steps in front of a 60kmh car...
