Shoal Lake could be the problem....

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story/2008/04/21/shoal-lake.html

Perhaps the combination of the chlorination, and the fluoride and orthophosphate leads to a certain smell eh.

Winnipeg has its new water cleaning system up and running and now our tap water is as good as the drinking water many buy at the store!

I have noticed that the bad tasting tap water is no more! Have you noticed?

Our tap water is great. when I used to travel Western Canada, ours was by far the clearest, best tasting of any of the major cities. The odd time, especially in late summer, there would be a slight smell, but I understand that was due to algae, which was completely harmless.

The only thing I notice lately is that the water tends to be a little more cloudy than the past. It takes running the tap longer before it clears up. Not sure what thats all about, but I don't buy bottled water unless I'm out somewhere and am thirsty and I can't find beer.

I notice the cloudy water at my office as well. They have been working on the water mains nearby and attribute it to that work. I don't notice the problem at my home.

As an aquarist, water quality is obviously a big concern for us.

For what it's worth, we replace 150-200 gallons of water in our aquariums each week and haven't noticed any off smells or cloudy water ... so far... and live in Elm-hood.

Perhaps the water dept. is doing work in your area? I would check with neighbors and see if they are also having the same issues, which would narrow it down to being something with your plumbing or something from the mains. (at which point I would call it in)

I was assuming it was my plumbing. For the past month or so, water is VERY cloudy. It "settles" and clears up in a minute, but does not make it very desirable to drink. Taste is no different to me, just not a fan of drinking water I cannot see through.

I run my tap low.. water comes out cloudy. I run my tap wide open and fast, it comes out clear. I have however taken that little screen off my tap and the limiter which is on most taps that limits the speed the water comes out (and aerates it). Its all about the air bubbles Smile

http://www.ehow.com/list_7676337_treatments-cloudy-tap-water.html

Letting It Settle

  • One of the principal causes of
cloudy water in developed countries and well-managed water systems is
the completely harmless behavior of air bubbles in the water. All water
has some quantity of dissolved air, usually to an unnoticeable degree.
However, in some cases tap water comes out of the faucet with somewhat
larger, more visible water bubbles, still sufficiently tiny to appear
like a general cloudiness. In some cases, the water even has a milky
look. When outdoor temperatures drop, there is a large temperature
difference between the pipes delivering water and the interior where the
water arrives; this change in temperature can aggravate the tendency
for "cloudy" air bubbles to form. For example, the water from the Los
Angeles aqueduct originally comes from the icy waters of the eastern
Sierras; it remains cool until it arrives through home faucets. To
remove the cloudiness, simply let the water sit at room temperature for
    several minutes.

I remeber when my street had new water pipes, we were told to run the water for a long time to allow whatever to clear.

I think if your water starts out discoloured you should get a complaint to the city and get your whole street to complain. You could be being poisoned with dirty, unsafe water.

It is common knowledge that the water being sent to the North End is of a lower, less expensive quality than River Heights and Charleswood.

Remember , Sam katz- "no new taxes", and cheaper "water for some"!
