http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Fire-chiefs-promote-plan-limiting-kids-access-to-lighters-matches-59985977.html

"Winnipeg will be one of seven cities participating in a pilot project to limit the access that children have to lighters and matches, it was announced today by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs at its annual conference here in the city."

I guess what they completely FAIL to mention is the percentage of kids who go out and buy lighters and matches just so they can go start fires.

Sheesh. Kids dont buy vehicles, yet they are somehow involved in a huge number of car accidents where they are the driver. I wonder how that is possible?

Those firechiefs have been inhaling too much of the wrong kind of smoke I reckon....putting stickers on retailers' doors ain't going to do squat.

Seems these guys neded an excuse for a "convention" (party) and needed to announce something.

.....just waiting for the lighter tax people to start screaming that no one is saving the children from lighters until it's taxed.

Oh, and don't forget to make using lighters in vehicles illegal. Lighting up while driving is hazardous and must be stopped! *insert hysterical comment dejour here*

its bad enough that they took away our light anywhere matches and made lighters freakin impossible to use.

Was nice to be able to buy some light anywhere matches this summer in the states, makes camping and survival training much easier.

Has anyone ever noticed that most of these house fires are started by children in low income families? Rental homes, subsidized housing etc.....those very individuals who could not possibly afford to smoke but seem to manage just fine......you rarely see kids playing with matches who hail from families with higher education, income etc....

I "played" with matches all the time as a kid.. and guns, and all sorts of "bad" things, hell I was driving at age 9!

mind you the matches were usually to start a fire to stay warm because I was the first one up in the morning, the guns to learn how to safely handle a firearm to deal with wild animals and the things I was driving were to help out on the farm

Just as an aside, a lot of the newer cars don't have lighters, they come as an option.

Growing up on the farm, none of that was considered "playing".....those were life skills for us eh Dean? Wonder what some of these little firebugs would do for fun if given the chance to be exposed to other, healthier pursuits?

well for fun we killed gophers and snakes,

PROTIP!:.. Never ever ever attempt to dissect a gopher that has been sitting in the hot sun dead all day.

yeah apparently gopher tastes not bad... but this gopher was not dried.. but was very bloated by time we cut in, with my very dull jackknife... I dont think anyone has ever seen six 9 year old boys scatter as fast as when I cut into that animal and the stench "poofed" out.

Better ban gasoline.. Someone may use it to get high or to use it in an arson.

Perhaps if we introduced a "match and lighter" registry, we could keep track of those that were used in a fire-related crime...

If they limit kids access to lighters and matches, how the hell are they going to light their cigarettes?
