The point is that while Wyatt is running around with his new found friend Ashton, who's doing his job as a full time city councillor? I doubt that he's been paid for pandering to Steve, but expects his reward later.

since when is being a city councillor considered a "full time" job?

Freeman

Since they receive a salary based on it being a full time job.

they received a salary for the fact that ward sized vastly went up AND that it COULD be a full time job if they wanted it to... but there is nothing NOTHING at all saying that they need to work more then 8 or so hours per month.

Thats fine, but lets just hope the people that voted for him know how he spends his time.

It becomes an issue if he isn't able to be reached by constituents/ unable to respond to constituents needs because he is working on Ashton's campaign.

When City Council was reduced in size, the salaries of councillors was essentially doubled, in recognition that wards would be bigger and time comitments would be greater and would essentially become a full time job. Of course, as soon as that happened, they all increased their budgets to allow for a full time assistant!

That should be a full time job. Given the responsibilities and the salary...

what responsibilities do you think they have?

I'm not sure just because a man is willing to use tax payer's dollars to fund things like healthcare/education/welfare/etc he should be called a socialist and put out to pasture on all his ideas.
Personally, i like canada for its kindness, and winnipeg for its quaint charm. If suddenly we took away all our social programs i wouldn't see any reason to stay in winnipeg -- in fact, i'd probably move to a province (or a country) where i could make big $$ for less taxes. Either keep us as we are, or people will stop supporting it.

I say abolish welfare. Able bodied adults should not be sitting on their asses getting handouts from taxpayers.

If Ashton isn't a socialist, then whats your definition?

All our social programs is why we pay the exorbitant taxes that we do. Maybe if we were allowed to keep more of our own money, we might be less cynical and want to help out more by choice, rather than having our paycheques ripped from our hands.

Ideologically, there is a major difference between thoughts on who is best to spend YOUR money....the government or you.

I know that I am best person to spend my money, if someone else wants the government to spend theirs, then they can turn it all over the them. Winnipeg City Councillors working two jobs - Page 2 Icon_smile

Now that Wyatt is out of EPC I would expect he'd have more time to go do other work.

Yep. There's a very clear distinction between the two philosophies. Just take a look at the discussion about the rights museum.

It's a completely different category of 'spending' so that's not really the case. If you gave the government your paycheck and they decided what you bought with it, that would the the situation you are describing. The difference in ideology is where the line is between services that should be supplied by the government (ie: paying for roads and police) and what shouldn't be provided (healtcare).

What about all the "other stuff" that government funds? And to what level? Are we talking about basic education or post secondary? Criminal justice system, or preventative and rehabilitaive programs? I think the reality is that we all understand the concept of socialism and are aware of what has to be funded by public money, but the NDP are socialists and Ashton has made it quite clear on some issues as to where he stands.

Yeah, I assume he would probably be at least fairly socialist.

i WONDER HOW MUCH TIME THE AVERAGE COUNCILLOR SPENDS? And what is the pay? $150,000?
Is that what they should be paid to run the city?

62K to 75K in pay

70K per year ward allowance

what they spend... is essentially what the entire city budget is.
