What exactly determines a city councilors pay? There seems to be a pretty big range in wages.

Base salary of 63Kish then when they chair/sit on committees (you know the stuff we expect them to do as councillors) they get extra.

Extra for being speaker/deputy speaker as well.

No, that's the minimum amount my employer would have to offer to have me even consider that type of position. That's in the private sector btw. Why would I take a drop in pay to assume more responsibility?

A lot of peeps still living in a world where $50k is "good" money. $50k was "good" 20 years ago. It's peanuts now. Wow, a whole entire $2,500 net a month, your living the good life with that lol. Considering that fuel and food alone eat half of that for most people and suddenly $50k ain't so much.

I reckon it depends on how big the office is that one manages but even at the provincial level an office manager (Admin 1 - ish) wouldn't get close to that. Most Directors don't get that much as a matter of fact.

I don't believe that the unions are paying that much even. Wink

You'd be surprised. Depends what industry your working in and your job function JTF. Even a lowly socialist bastard like myself can easily top that figure in a year without too much difficulty. And obviously there are union workplaces paying that much even for office managers as CoW management are also union represented (WAPSO).

I'd like to see them increase the cap at which they are forced to disclose compensation. $50,000 as a limit is ridiculous. I don't think it should be required to disclose every single employee that earns a living wage that is employed by the city. It's ridiculous. That cap has never gone up for as long as I can remember. While it may have been a barometer of how many "well" middle management and above there was employed by the city, it's now including basically everyone who works for the city that is full-time and above a Level B clerk or better.

Do we really need to be outraged that every cop, fireman, paramedic, senior clerk, office manager, tradesperson etc. that works for the city makes $50,000 or more? Please. I'd be stunned if they earned less and stayed with the city.

I'd love to see how much better they could run things with a bunch of managers earning <$50,000 running a department full of employees making $15/hr. That would really attract the best and brightest to the city. You think service sucks now........

The publication of earnings of civic employees earning over $50k is a requirement under provincial legislation called the Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act, which requires public disclosure in any organization which receives funds from the Province of Manitoba. It was brought in by the NDP government.

So, any changes would best be brought to the attention of the leadership of any union in the province so they can tell the NDP what to do.
